RE: 1.60 carb mod project
I can appreciate the concept that manufactures have to take when offering different levels or grades in their products to suite the price ranges of us buying public but, I wish OS would have standardized their carb mounting process to the draw bar and not bolts or setscrews like the cheaper line of engines. One would think that the 1.60 at the cost on today’s market would be considered a top of the line engine and warrant a top of the line carb and mount like the professional line of competition engines. Marketing strategy for selling the FI engines? Makes me think so….
Yes the cut ring that setscrews make seem to be a reasonably secure way to hold the carb in position and again it was an option that I considered early on. Like you stated, there is enough material in the area for a draw bar so someone at OS had that in mind but must have been over ruled for cost savings.
Got everything mounted up last night on the test stand and ready to run for the first time maybe tomorrow if it’s nice outside. I have it set up for initial break in without the vp-30 or muffler pressure from the Jett-turbo muffler, that’s been plugged off. I’ll be running a Menz 18x8 and Wildcat 30/18 fuel and OS8 plug with the engine mounted horizontally and the tank centerline level with the crank. Beginning needle setting will be 2 turns out on the main, 2 turns out on the low end and the midrange shut off until broken in and stabilized. I’ll report what happens good or bad.
