The fuel and the pressure lines should be the same diameter.

What I do to prime the tank is, I pinch off the line going to the pipe and flip the cap until I get fuel to the carb. I rarely over-prime my car by doing this but I have to pull on the pull cord more. I'd rather pull on the cord than have to clear a flooded engine.
Some people take the fuel line off of the pipe and blow into it.
