Default ST S-29 Problems

Hi,
I have a older ST S-29 that I'm having a few problems with, first off I've followed all the recomended spray bar/ high/low needle settings, tank/fuel lines are good, compression good etc. The eng. starts fine idles good, transition is fare, midrange is good, high end! here's where the problem occurs. At full throttle the eng. surges like it's not lean enough, 1 to 2 clicks to the lean side is to much, 1to 2 clicks to the rich side is to rich. Also upon a quick chop to idle the eng. will die, this happens at any throttle setting . Should I start looking for possible air leaks around o-rings and gaskets? It's driving me nuts!
Thanks in advance,
Robert
