A brushless motor is not a DC motor it is a 3-phase motor. It will not run without a brushless controller to produce the 3-phase power it requires.

I do hope you haven't destroyed it but I've never tried doing that so I don't know. Didn't the fact that the motor has 3 wires and a battery only has 2 make you think something might be different ?
