I believe you might have answered your own question , "Air goes in , nothing goes out "
You dont need any pressure build up in a gas fuel tank , the check valve would allow pressure to build up in the tank .
Have you ever opened up a well shaken hot fuel can , they can build up a lot of pressure , possibly enough to rupture a tank or force a line off.
