If the clutch shoes were slipping that much the clutch bell would be discolored from excessive heat and you would have toasted clutch bell bearings.
Are you sure the slipper is assembled correctly?
Or maybe the diff is slipping.(I don't think it's this, but I'm just tossing out ideas)
