Do you think they are necessary or just for 'fun' and looks?

In my opinion, flaps are not needed on this plane... although they could certainly add to the cool/scale factor. My P-47 lands nice and slow and has shown no tendency to drop a wing at slow airspeeds. I got a lot of "oohs and aahs" from the pit area as she settled in gently on the mains and rolled out with the tail up until slowing to a crawl. Not many planes make me look good, but this one did. [8D]
