Hello,
I’m not sure where to post my questions but I guess in this section.
I read so many good comments on the KAOS, that I’m getting warm to build one. I already have the plans.
No I got some questions about the flight characteristics.
*Can it do knife edge? It seems to me that the fuselage doesn’t have so much “side area”.
*Is it a fast plane (with a standard .60)
*What is the vertical performance with a .60?
I had a Super Kaos 60 for 19 years and I put many hundreds of flights on it, so I think I can speak with some authority on the subject.
1. Can it do knife edge? Just barely. Mine was powered by a slightly souped up Super Tigre G.61 and it would just hold level flight in knife edge at full throttle.
2. Is it a fast airplane? Mine was very fast, and I'm comparing this to the many modern pattern ships that fly at my RC field. However, it should be noted that I slightly modified the Super Tigre G.61. Super Tigre rates the stock G.61 at 1.75 HP at 16,000 RPM (an RPM I doubt many people run the engine at). In it's stock form, mine would spin an 11 x 7 wood prop at about 12,000 RPM static. Uping the ante was easy. I added a Perry carburetor and pump and a Super Tigre 20" tuned muffler. Notice I said muffler, not tuned pipe. It was very quiet with a slight tinny rattle, much like a motorcycle. I liked it. Anyway, after the additions were installed, my G.61 would spin an 11 x 8 wood prop at 12,900 RPM static. Now, that's a pretty healthy increase in power.
4. What is the vertical performance with a .60? Don't know about a .60, but my slightly modified .61 would accelerate the Kaos while going straight up. It was awesome. All on standard 15% fuel.
Beyond that, the Super Kaos flew great. It is not state-of-the-art, but it grooves really well and will do all of the basic pattern maneuvers quite well if you practice and get to know the airplane. My favorite maneuvers were loops, cuban-8, horizontal 8, vertical 8, immelmans, stall turns, 4-point hesitation rolls, slow rolls, 4-leaf clovers, etc. Great pattern sport aircraft!
