There was a rocket plane back in the 50s or 60s that a very thick t.e. on the rudder and nice and pointy on the front. Looked like someone took an axe to it This was one of multi thousand MPH jobbies so I think it depends on the circumstances. I chop them off square on fun planes and taper them on scale ones.
