Default G3 Screenshots

I bought G3 a few days ago and I think it is awsome. I especially like the slope soaring and the photofields enhancements. I must also say that the graphics on the G3 aircraft are outstanding. I was surprised to find myself saying - I wish I had a model that looked that good. The shine, reflection and chromatic look are fantastic.
So a question: what graphic programs are used to make these highly reflective skins (any free or cheap?). I imported G2 skins but the .tga files did not seem to work on G3 planes (at least the Mustang I tired). What is the G3 skin file format to use (dds?)

These are the shots of my modified for slope soaring P-51.
