Default Trailing edge flight surfaces must be tapered?

OK guys I've embarked upon scratch building an 80 inch aircraft from some designs found on the web. I'm now constructing the tail feathers and wondering how important it is to have the elevator and rudder surfaces taper to a point at the rear? I cannot see any real reason this is required beyond allowing the air to flow smoothly off the trailing edge of the wing. When deflected tapering becomes rather redundant, at least to my thinking.

So, other than rounding out the leading edge surfaces is there much benefit to be gained from having the trailing edges taper to a point? Note that my tail feathers round out at 1/4 thick in section.
