During WWI the difference between rotary powered fighters and others was fundamental tactical knowledge. The rotarys could turn on a dime in one direction but not so good in the other.

But with people not being stupid, opposing fighter pilots soon learned to counter it. When the nose of a rotary-powered airplane pitched up, they stomped the rudder and filled the sky to the left of the airplane with lead.
