I have an old slidding glass door I sometimes use when I don't want to over lap the covering on the plane. I just cut out A paper template first then cut out the design and make about A quarter inch over size on anything that is going to over lap then put the colors together on the glass and it peels off quite well. Then I just cover the areas with these pre made sections. It works out well if weight is A problem. I only use Ultrcote covering, Easy to work with and I get less air bubbles due to the less heat it takes plus it takes to the sun better then other coverings. If weight isn't A problem I just layer the covering on the plane. The method sounds harder then it really is.
Keep your head down and watch where you step!!!!!!!
