Gunny, Ok here we go...
Vertical Stab Lights on NAVY ONLY: The light on top of the Vertical Stab Light is white/red, measureing 6" high (total). Both colors because there are 2 seperate lights are stacked on top of each other, 3" high each, 4" in diameter. These "strobe" lights have a .5/2.2 sec, on/off respectively. Im not sure why the pilot needs both colors.
Jon, the red is used to indicate that the plane is operating, i.e. you turn it on before starting the engine and turn it off after you've shut down. The white is a "normal" strobe light.
