Most people are surprised to find out that there are clubs not far away. Like the others here, I strongly urge you to look for an instructor.

Failing that, if you want to learn by yourself, get a small electric. You want one that has 3-channel control, elevator-rudder-throttle or elevator-aileron-throttle. The EZStar is a great flying plane that is very durable and gives you reasonable odds of learning on your own.
