So, if you want to use your standart brushless setup, make elongated breaks in between flights as the motor gets extremely hot, it even melted the plastic on the frame...
I have, however, not tested a heat sink on that particular setup.
The heat sinks do go a long way in helping this out.

The bottom line, is that if you are going to run a brushless with flights over 5-8 minutes (the original design time) then you MUST use a good heat sink, lest you run the risk of melting the frame and motor.

So, as a next step I purchased the 450TH 3150KV outrunner from helidirect and the CC Phoenix 25.
I am running this setup on governor high mode with either a 1800 or 2200 10 and respective 12C lipo, the flight time has decreased a littlebit due to the higher head speed which leads to the next problem with the #36:

The 36 has a very pronounced tail wag due to power changes eg rapid pitch movements which results from the relativey slow tail.
Hmmm...

If the rotor and tail is properly adjusted the stock .18/60 deg servos do fine.

I replaced my tail servo with a 9g slightly faster Tower servo, and have had no problems either way.

You can set a very low pitch angle combined with a high rpm and will still encounter that annoying wag, the head speed I am running now gives me a nice positive climb rate is far above the normal non idle up walkera standard headspeed and feels from the emitted noises almost too fast, I haven't measured it yet but I will see if I can get any improvements in the following days (I'll change around blades and experiment more with headspeeds and pitch).
Something is wrong then, the tail should not be wagging that badly.

Maybe the sensitivity is high and ok but the "extent" is too high... e.g. there is too much servo throw... or the opposite condition.

The worst problem with the gyro however is not the slow drift but the overcontrolling tendency and the resuting tail wag after stick inputs (feathering back) which makes turns very challenging.
Again this seems to indicate that maybe the servo response is too fast, not the other way around.

There must be some delay or lag to stick inputs, lest the tail behave as you describe.

A slower less sensitive gyro/servo response should result in a slight rotation of the tail when you add throttle, but not a corresponding tail wag condition.

All in all I am happy with the #36 now as it is inexpensive but i would NOT AT ALL recommend ANY of the supplied walkera electronics. If you are looking for cheap fun better go with the barebone and 'quality' electronics.
Seperates are always better, because you end up spending more on better quality parts.

Last thing I'd like to add is that if I would have had that choice or would have known all the trouble I was facing with the 36 I would have bought a T-Rex instead...but...how should I know...and maybe that's the fun we are all seeking here, to get that little thing flying properly and have fun with it!
I dunno.

The Walkera's have their problems as does every other heli out there including the T-Rex.

Even the stock stuff (I'll omit the battery) can be made to fly, and fly well, but unfortunately it takes a lot of effort and tweaking to get it to fly out of the box.

You can get a slightly more expensive heli, and have fewer things to tweak (check out the MX-400's RTF kits), but all require a good deal of initial effort.

I have a bunch of Walkera's as well as helis from other manufacturers. I can't say that they have cost me more than 80.00 each more than their original cost to get them up and flying well.

This makes them much cheaper to operate and repair than my CNC'd/Carbon/All Metal electrics.

So I usually drag out my "cheap" helis when I want to have a little fun, and the more expensive ones end up staying on the shelf, because they are more precious.
