I just found the perfect size wire to replace the smaller dia. side-mounted cable. And yes, it is picture hanging wire. As far as the strand count goes at that small scale, a few twists locked in a cordless drill will fix that up. The thimbles and swages can be made from thin pieces of epoxy putty.
