The ACE hardware stores and hobby shops typically have 36 inch brass and steel and stainless steel rods for sale.
To solder the props on to the shaft you should be using a small hobby, or shop propane torch. If you need more heat, a "Mapp gas" torch burns a little hotter. I typically flux, then put the two pieces to be soldered together. Then begin heating the metal. Keep the torch moving around to evenly heat the prop and shaft. I touch the solder, or silver solder to the piece and get a little blob sitting on the metal. Keep heating the pieces till that blob runs into and around the joint. Once this happens run a bit more solder around the joint if necessary, and then let it cool.
The only way to learn is practice. Try a couple of rods and plates before you do your props.
