Have you tried putting a low voltage domestic light dimmer in the circuit, thats what I use it gives infinate adjustment to the temp of the wire. Try it they are not expensive, for a wing profile why not make up some airfoil sections based on the PC9, nice short wing and an easy cut.
What can I say good luck sounds inappropriate for someone thats ill, but I wish you and yours well as always.
