Default Shock Flyer Yak

Just ordered the Shock Flyer Yak. I hope I don't crash this one after 4 flights like I did with my Edge 540. Are there any differences between the new shock flyers and the older ones?

Yes the older one you could have by the end of the week, the new ones you won't have till the end of DEC.

It seems significantly different - structurally- than the three current models (which are identical in construction.)

Hi guys, where did you order your Yak from? It's available from Ikarus-USA but not in stock. I want to put an AXI 2208 in it but was told the ShockFlyer Brushless motor is a better choice. I might also try Hitec HS-50's instead of HS-55's to save on weight.
what do you guys think about the motor and servo choices?

AXI 2208 34 is THE choice..awesome performance on a light-weight 2 cell. NSP can set you up...but look out for hobby-lobby...might not support you if you have problems (I can tell you!)

Have fun!

Actaully the motor of choice seems to be switching from 2208's to the new 2204/54 or a light CD Rom motor on two cells.
5.5oz RTF weights are easily achieved with those components.

I was under the impression that the CD Rom motors needed 3 cells to produce the output we like. The weight of the third cell negates the weight advantage of the cd rom motor unless you limit yourself to tiny 340 MAH batteries. I'm probably wrong on this, but that's my impression.

The AXI 2204/54 CAN'T run on 3-cells without a LOT of throttle management. You run it on 2-cell 340 packs. Mine should be showing up today. I have it kitted out with a 7 gram Berg RX, 6 gram phoenix 10, 3.5 grams servos... should be the heat. I'm putting the gear in a Superstar without landing gear... the 5.2-5.5 oz planes all had gear and heavier servos. Mine should be around 5 oz flat!

I'm really interested to hear how this combo works out!

I'm a big fan of "lighter is better" and if this can trim an oz or more off of my foamies, I'm in!

I don't use the Landing Gear anymore. But i use a CF strip on the bottom where the plane will contact the grass upon landing. Anyone who's had shockies for any length of time should have some in the boneyard. So I used a strip from the wings of a "deceased bird"

I'm pretty psyched over the combo too! When I did the math, I figured it would cut just under 2 ozs off what I have now (AXI 2208/34, Berg 6 ch, 6.6g servos, Kokam 700 2-cell, landing gear).

I'm flying in a gym so I don't think I'll need the carbon strip. I might do the fishing line mod, though.

Hi

Just a note to say I have already had a nemesis over here in the Uk and would avoid it unless you want to redesign the wing. I have flown many many shockies and this one is heavier and also has completely different flying charateristics. Infact I personally would avoid using it indoors now as it has a tendancy to tip stall at the slow speeds we are used to with the normal shockies.

I have gone back to a edge 540 and 330 with a few small copy cat mods on the undercarriage taken from the new styles ( the only good Improvement from the nemesis)

other than that I am waiting for the Cessna due in febuary ( it only appears on the German part of www.Ikarus.net)

good luck and fly safe

I just finished my F3A shocky. Nice plane, havent flown it yet. It does however have some really nice changes since the original shockies. The main bonus is that they include a piece to box in the fuselage. This results in a very stiff, rigid fuse, without that much extra weight. It will come out slightly heavier than the old shockies, but they are considerably larger too. The fit is much better than the old shockies too. The landing gear and wing struts have been redesigned as well, and the landing gear is more flexible and has more spring in it. The new shockys also include pushrod braces that seem to work really well.

Cant wait to fly it. The F3A is really cool looking all finished. Ill be posting a build thread soon.

This plane builds so much easyer then the old Shock Flyers. Also compared to the old Shock Flyers, the fuselage seems much more stiff. Now all I have to do is install the electronics and its done.

Can someone tell me how the numbering system on brushless motors works? I want to get a shockflyer yak and am curious of the 22/7 -60d motor they sell for it on hobby lobby. Has anyone used this motor with this setup or should i purchase an axi or other instead. Im looking to fly it outdoors.

Thanks

just built mine and flew it. its a edge 540. the power on mine is a esskay 400 outrunner from hobby-lobby for 20$. I find for the price it is fantastic. the plane itself is around 9 oz. kind of heavy, but a lot of reinforceing in it for extreme manuvers. anyway, mine does unlimited vertical at a little over 3/4 throttle and hovers at 1/2 throttle. Did I mention that i am around 5600 ft. altitude? to get to the point, i love that plane, and will have many more in my future.

5600ft isnt the idea to keep it below about 15ft thats where the impressive manuvers take place

Yea, I know i usually keep it at about that, I go up a few feet higher though when I hover, because I am still learnig how to do it. I can hold it for about 20 sec. and bail out. However, I dont know what the elevation in syarcuse is, but up here, we have to overpower everything, for maximum preformance. The air is pretty thin up here, and there is less of it for the prop to grab. Not trying to insult you or anything. Were all pilots here
