RE: GREAT PLANES FLATOUTS
one more thing to all the guys that are moding the kit thats great if u want to take the time to do so however my personal feeling is that if u buy a good kit than you shouldnt have to boil, drill, or ream almost all the parts on a tree for it to properly fit i dont have the patience for it. just my opinion..

RE: GREAT PLANES FLATOUTS
you know for how much i hate the flatouts i never had to do any of this stuff you guys say you did to get the parts to fit have they changed them since they first came out? maybe its jsut that i hate the flatouts so much for their flight characteristics anaways that i chose to delete the agony of making the parts fit together from my memory.

they are arfs, back when they first came out and everyone thought they would be good and was building them in like 2 hrs, theyre auctually easier than a lot of the way way better foamies out there as far as time goes. are you using ca and kicker? usually these go through the uilding process fast.

Has any one else had problems with the suplied servo arms? Mine have a lot of slop that lets the control surface move without the servo moving.

RE: GREAT PLANES FLATOUTS
my opinion, dont waste your time on the 'crap-outs', buy a charger rc cr-1,$29.99. i cant believe that great planes hasn't done anything to improve these crap planes. landing gear shoves through the wings, hinges break when barely applying pressure, L-shaped connector on servo horn breaks, aile servo wont center, foam brittle, ect..ect..ect..!
sorry for the rant, but why would you want some thing this s#itty when ther are so many other(much better) choices out there that don't need to be modified to perform well.
my $.02

RE: GREAT PLANES FLATOUTS
Just started flying my Reflection. 4* 2cell (750ma) flights and no damage.
It pulls out fine at the start of a pack and not so well towards the end. I'm happy to keep it light, so I think I'll stay at 7.4v. Its 10.3oz(292g). Everything in it is cheap , so range is not good but I got it to fly low and close .

RE: GREAT PLANES FLATOUTS
I agree with Victory Roll totally. I just bought a Reflection. I'm in no hurry to build it yet. I am going to use blenderm on the hinges. I'm also changing the design on the landing gear too. Even with having to do these things, I still think the thing is a good deal. Especially if it flies as good as I hear it does. It's too bad people don't enjoy building like it used to be. I'm one of those types that enjoys the building as much as the flying. I think it's fun to put your own spin on things when the manufacturer or designer throws something out there you don't like. That's part of what the hobby should be about.
I would really like to start on my Reflection today, but the setup I'm using currently resides on a BHRC Fomojo that is flying great. By the way, I might mention that I paid $50 for that plane and still had to modify the landing gear.

RE: GREAT PLANES FLATOUTS
In Tower Hobbies the Extra 300 flatout costs $17.85(the cheapest flatout) and the Edge 540 is $42.99 (the most expensive Flatout)
Both have a wingspan of 35.5", both are monoplanes, both have the same general design, and both come with the same motor.
There is also a $10 difference between the two biplanes, yet the rest are all $24.99.
Does anyone know why such a price descrepancy?

RoyR,
I sure would like to know why the price difference myself... I was going to pick up the 540 but for that price I ordered a 3D foamy...
Golf,
I don't know squat about electrics so I'm looking forward to seeing any answers you get myself...
Good Luck all!

RE: GREAT PLANES FLATOUTS
I was just wondering where I should set the power so I can hover it out of my hand. I have a extra 300s flatouts model and it flys great. had to add on allot of suport though, the wings flex a ton.

RE: GREAT PLANES FLATOUTS
Returning back to RC from my nitro days. Very impressed with the electric stuff and their performance. Better then the nitro stuff from way back when.
Anyways, I started with a Charger RC. Lots of flex and heavy for the GP rimfire I was using. Flew ok.
Then went to a GP Turmoil. hardware is very brittle and you can break things quite easily. The hinge clips don't open easily during install and I pushed several back into the foam. The concept is great, the material isn't.
I found the Turmoil to have way less flex then the Charger but the foam on the Turmoil is very brittle. Any handling leaves finger marks and it cracks with any stress.
With the recommended Rimfire, it was ballistic. That was a lot of fun. Just don't bump it on anything or you will be fixing a break or crease.
The big reason I have parked it is aileron flutter. On the back side of even small loops, the ailerons flap away. the linkage is solid so this was very irritating.
The final flight, I lost both ailerons and had to steer with the very effective rudder. Landed with min. damage. Both ail horns had torn out of the foam. enough of this nonsense.
I have built and flown a Formosa and absolutely love it. more to my idea of what a plane should fly like. Still got lots of vertical and roll rate is staggering. needed CF to stiffen the structure to my liking.
I may go back to the Charger (one built and another kit sitting there). I may try and figure out the Turmoil. But for now, I can strongly recommend the formosa as a great flying plane. More pattern then 3D but it can be made to work.

RE: GREAT PLANES FLATOUTS
try boiling the parts trees. (all the plastic parts still on the plastic mold) you boil them for 4 minutes then you turn them over and let them sit with the heat off for 1 minute. this makes them allot less britle and easier to snap on.

RE: GREAT PLANES FLATOUTS
has any one seen or heard about the new flat outs they use hinge tape, I was intrested on the piper cub but notice it said "**Great Planes does not suggest using a brushless set-up**" I wonder why, I am flying an E-flight Extra 260 now and its my first profile foamy I really like it and the quality is good, my only complain is on the pushrod/horn system I whish it was a bit more Heavy Duty as I feel its flexing during strong G manuvers. Should I give the piper a try or will I be disapointed?

RE: GREAT PLANES FLATOUTS
I just had a 300 kit delivered last week... It had the old snap on hinge system... I haven't heard of them going to Hinge tape.. But who knows its problably cheaper for them anyway...
