Well, if my extra took the same way as yours i don't know how long i could wait for the katana md to be honest... I get anxious when one of my planes is out of service, and even if i don't get to fly everyday i must allways have at least 2-3 planes ready to go to make SURE none of my precious flight time is wasted when i do get a chance to get out there.

So what are you building next? Another extra?

p.s do they make pills for this condition? bah forget it i don't want to cure...

Pictures ???

Sorry to hear about that. I've seen some larger birds at our RC club that seem like they are chasing .40-.60 size glow models. I'd hate to see one of those collisions!

Time to get e new one and get back in the air.

Wow, hope the bird suffered some injury at least... That's one expensive small game projectile right there...

I'd love to see a seagull (not the extra, the bird) go through a .60 glow plane's prop at wot!

ok, preparing for a response from the vegan tree hugger activists out there; bite me you hypocrite... Stop pussifying the planet and go kill something!

Davidsons, sucks to loose a plane but man, what are the odds! Must have been cool to see that mid air too bad no video!

I'm using a Hitec 65 on the rudder and HS 55's on everything else. They work fine. 65's all the way around would be a hot setup. Get the ones with carbonite gears instead of metal.

just would like to know what is the best motor yet on this plane . mine i have the park 480 running a 3s evo 2150 lipo with a apc 10/10e does not want to hover . but flys fine other than thaqt . is not fast , i hate looking for the motor combo . so my ? what is the best setup for this plane . i was thinking of running 12 cells nihm in it to boost power as i have 2 6 cell pack for some thing else. i started with a apc 11/5.5e then went to the 12/6 wood / and then a 12/12e so far the 10/10e is the best i can get on it . plane flys great .

Wouldn't wing loading be a bit high with 12nimh? what do 12 of those weigh?

Have you tried a 12x6 apc E prop? Sounds to me like you have way too much pitch preventing your motor form getting up in it's most efficient rev range. i haven't seen anyone use that tall a pitch or wood (glow) props on that motor in any of the threads i am subscribed to.

What kind of esc do you have? Does it have adjustable timing? What is your auw?

Some people have had very good results with that motor.

I know the motor sold by extreme flight rc for their extra 300s ep would do well. But like any motor setup the correct prop must be used. If you mention which kv rating motor of the two 480's that you have and some details about your esc someone might be able to provide more info. Marietta georgia is only 1000ft altitude so that shouldn't be the problem.

setup is
e/filte park 480 910 kv
3s lipo fpower evo 2150
align 35a speedcontrol se for high timeing
prop that i have tried so far are
apc 10X10e best so far
apc 11X5.5e climbs ok but will not hover
apc 12x12e to slow no power
top flite wood 12x6 ok all the store had in that size.

i have read that this planes like more watts . i think mine is only around 275.

still new to the electric stuff and have a hard time understanteding all the info out there . plane fly good for all the norm stuff. but not the hot plane i want.

hope this helps.

i'm pretty sure 12x6E is what people use on that one if i remember correctly.

I have a 12x6 on a 905kv motor by apache and it kicks some serious but. It's just like the extreme flight torque 2818T/900

If youre planning on going even bigger after this plane you could shoehorn a torque 2814T/820 143 gram motor in there, it'd be a weight penalty but it wouldn't be the limiting factor in your power system for sure.

If money is not a concern, check out the kontronik kora 10 series of motor, especially the lower kv ones for this application;

http://www.kontronik.com/K1016LS.htm

this one would be ridiculously powerfull on a 12x6E with a 3 cell. (as long as the pack can take the load, i have NO fear on running these over spec, they use special magnets that resist incredibly high heat without demagnetizing)

mkeigwin,
I have that same motor in mine and it is weak for 3D flying. I've experimented with several APC props; 11x3.8SF, 11x4.7SF, 11x7E and a 12x6E. The worst of the bunch was the 11x7E. The others are close and IMHO, the 12x6E is probably the best. My TP 2070 Extreme provides a noticable improvement over my Pro-lite 2100.

I'm considering a Hacker A30-12M for better 3D performance. The Torque 2814-820 that Atlanta Hobby sells could also be a good 500 watt option.

I'm no 3D pilot, just learning! But here's my setup, Mostly recomends from the other RC forum group:
I am using the Hacker A30-16M, APC 12X6e, MaxxAmps 2100 HV and a CC45A, hs 65carbonites all round!

E-Meter readings from this morning :
10.21 v
34.9 a
357 w

Lots-O-Power, 10 ft Take off to vert to spec, no prob!
Can do more than I am able to, but looks real good in the hands of an experianced pilot (which I am Not)!
I just figured that if I am going to learn Pattern or 3D then I need enough power to pull me out of a tight spot,

I got it with this setup!

There's my 2c worth

FWIW, I'm running the Eflite 480 1020 Kv. I've tried both 11x5.5e and 11x7e props with TP Prolite 2100 3S packs. I have not gottne the plane to do much in the way of 3D yet, but it has plenty of power for acrobatic flying. Need to up the control throws and try some 3D.

What props are you guys using with this motor?

Phillip,

Thanks for the reply. So, is it better to go up in diameter and down in pitch for 3D?

manual states the cg is 7-8 cm back from leading edge measured at wing tip
i am hereing conflicting stories where the cg is..............

does anyone know the cg is and they have successfully flown their seagull extra 300 ?

one guy said right below the black line.. then he later posted that he had to rebuild the tail? is this the result of improper cg?(BDAVISON)
here is the link for the manual, seagull extra 300 cg info on page 15

got so good flight's on it today . cg is under the black line maybe 3 mm back would be better . best prop i have found so far is the apc 11x8e pulls good will hang on the prop for alittle while . areo's great . 2 more guy's at the club are going to get one . lands easy. but still alittle fast for landing.
as far as the motor i still usinf the park 480 910kv got a new lipo today apex 2100 3s . i got a 20 min flight on it . i ordered a new motor but it has not come in yet . went off on that should be in the 400watt range . hope it will 3d much better.

Yes, especially while hovering. A larger prop with throw more air over the control surfaces which keeps the plane maneuverable when it's not moving forward.

jokr420,
The "E" (elecric) has thin blades, the "SF" (slow fly) has wide blades. There is a big difference in amps draw between the two.
