Default Why is my motor doing this?

Today I maidened my Katana S 3d foamy, aweesome plane! Anyway, I was in the air for a bit, when my motor started sounding funny. It sounded as though I kept putting throttle back and forth quickly, but I wasn't. I landed it, everything LOOKED fine, but it was still making this sound. Do you think a battery that didn't provide enough power could've done this? It's an e-flite 370 1080 kv, the lipo is a 700 mah kokam. The plane is a 40 in ws foamy, and i've heard of other people using more like 1320 lipos. Anyone know what it could be?

Sounds like a low voltage cutoff to me from the esc.

It's the battery. If the battery is 20C rated (and actually capable of delivering 20C, I've seen some rated at 20C that couldn't do 15C for 5 seconds) you should be fine. Otherwise, get a TP 1320. That setup is pretty small for a 40" foamy. A Park 400 with the TP 1320 would be a better suited setup.

I may go to a 400, but right now a 370 is all i got. I'll try to setup the esc with a different voltage cuttoff.

I think the 700 Kokams have a lower amperage rating. You might be getting too low on voltage and hitting the ESC battery cut off. Try a different battery (if you have one, or a friends) or try a smaller prop.

Just a possible one here, I have had out runners especialy the cheaper end break one or more of the multi wound stator winds and while this does not stop the motor working compleatly it drives the ESC compleatly nuts with out of spec back EMF pulses so check the 3 phase joint from solid core to flexible wire and also if its in star format the star join, I have a video here of my generic cheapo motor performing the swan song, see if its anything like you get, if it is then thats the problem heres the youtube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmGgWVpBXcU

Thanks for the vid, but it didn't seem like I had any similar issues, but thanks.

Like someone else posted your Lipo is not up to the job. That motor and that small Lipo is only good for about 3 or 4 minutes. In the meantime you are overstressing it and it will be very short lived.

I think I'm gonna buy a 1320 tp lipo, then an ef 400 brushless motor. The 370 allows it to hover, but pulling out is too slow for me, and I'd be more comfortable with more power.

Victoryroll-91. Is your speed control set for hard timing. Solved the problem on my motor. Made a sound of a stripped gearbox only at a certain load.

Should I change to a soft cut off?

I have a Jeti 8A brushless speed controller. And on the instructions it tells you if you are using an outrunner simular to an axi motor you should programe the controller to operate on hard timing. Default being soft timing. This has nothing to do with the cut-off. Programed mine using the remote. (as per instructions of speed controller) Sure you have the same problem. Just get someone to set it up for hard timing.
