Default RE: New - Katana S30e by Sebart - Looks Awesome

Here are some numbers that I worked up and posted in another thread. Thought they might be interesting here too.

Supposing that 1 sqr DM = 15.500031 sq in. and we have 36.5 sqr dm, that gives us roughly 566 sq in. of wing area. Now if we suppose that the AUW is at 42 oz. or 1190 grams (going on the heavy side) and we feed that into a cubic wing loading calc, we come up with roughly 5.39 oz. a cubic ft. If we do it the traditional way, I'm coming up with roughly 10.685 oz/sqr. ft.

If so this should be one floaty plane with enough weight to handle some wind, yet slow down and do high alpha 3D with the best of them.

Formula used:
Loading (oz/sq.ft) = Weight(oz) / ( Wingspan(in) * Avg Wing Chord(in) / 144 )

I guessed the avg wing chord to be 11.505" which gave me the rough wing area of 566.046 thus matching the 1 sqr DM = 15.500031 sq in. formula above.

Here is a moto calc guess of the power that I'll have. I bought a hacker A30-10xl to go in this one.

I also added a few more pictures. I've been digging and I also emailed Sebart and Fedon and asked for more. That and I stole some of the pictures from the German thread as well.

I'm relatively new to electrics and looking for some help in getting one of these set up. What are the calculations needed for number of watts needed for flight and how long you can expect to stay up etc. Also, what are some good set ups for this one. I talked with one guy on another site and he was using a Kontronik motor because it was about 30 grams lighter. He uses a Flightpower 1800maH pack for 3D flight and a 3300 for pattern. I was thinking of using the Flightpower 2170 maH pack.

Would there be an advantage to a 4S1P pack?

I don't know which one looks better. The Green or the Blue. Probably the Blue. I want one and I want to put my O.S. .46 in it.[>:]

Hello Ben,

There are a bunch of different approaches to take. A 3s 2170 pack in this plane should be just about perfect from what Seba and Alfo are saying about it. They are flying it on packs of about that size using a Hacker A30-14xl out runner. That out runner is not being sold here in the US yet. I read somewhere that it may be soon though.

I'm planning to run and have purchased gear to run a Hacker A30-10XL using the new TP Extreme packs in the 11.1 volt range. Or 3s. I am going to run a 13x6.5 to start with and then prop up to a 14x7 or down to a 12x6 depending on flight times and temps, etc. Having not seen the plane yet and not know how much room there is to deal with CG issues, I don't know if I would recommend a 4s pack or not. Looking at the fact that you live in CO though, I would say a 4s pack would give you more punch and you might enjoy the performance more than a 3s pack. Where as a high output 3s pack at sea level will be fine I think. There are many, many variations that can be used on this plane, and in time I think you'll see more and more come to light. On the German thread that I've linked to, I found the setup that I'm planning to use.

One thing to remember with a 4s setup, most ESC's will require that you add an additional BEC to deal with the servo's. So you are trading weight for some instant performance. Personally I think it's a draw. I'm not sure which Kontronik you friend was thinking of though. I used to run a bigger one in my Banchee and I loved it, it was a great motor. On that I was running 5s and spinning 17 and 18 inch props though.

Luigi at Fedon has made it easy for you though. Servo's, motor, ESC, and Battery all in one. http://www.fedonaircraft.net/album2_002.htm The only thing that I would recommend from there is a 13x6.5 prop and getting a park bec or a smart bec from http://www.dimensionengineering.com

Hope that helps, if you need more info, please post and I'll do my best. [8D]

Ohy... that should be interesting. [X(][:-] You'll need to build up the firewall a good bit though as this thing is designed from the ground up to be E powered. It might shake to death with that thing on the front. If you do it, be sure to post pictures and let us know how it turns out. I think that I like the green the best, but I can't decide which looks better either. I think the best looking one will be the one flying!!

Could you get more flight time out of a 4S over a 3S? I know the S means in series to increase voltage and P means parallel to increase maH, but I'm not sure on much more than that.

Yeah, so is the Mini Funtana, but you see guys putting .30 size four strokes on them. And yes, the best looking one is the one flying!

Not generally. You just get more punch for the same duration, maybe a little more because you don't have to use as much throttle, but not like adding a pack in parallel.

Here and there. Mostly at Briscoe park when I'm in town or down in Thomaston while I'm skydiving... well, now while, but between loads while waiting. I used to fly at St. Mt. but I let my membership go. Skydiving is my other passion and takes a lot of my time when not working. These were my first love and so they stay around.

Where do you fly? Tree top?

Where do you live? I'm just over 78 off of Rockdale, i.e. Grayson Parkway.

I think they are going to be more in line with what other planes this size are selling for, $179

Honest mistake, however I'm sure that it will be worth every penny and then some. The larger Katana was/is a work of Art, I can't wait to get my hands on this one!

I would have to look, but I would think there are some Axi's and Himaxx's that would work very well. Probably even some of the off brand names, might be a little heavier, but a LOT lighter on the wallet. It really depends on the KV's and the manufactures specs on the motors, etc.

I looked at some of the Axi motors, but I'm not sure which one to use. I really like the idea of the Torque motor. 143 grams isn't bad.

I've heard nothing but good things about those motors so I don't think you would go wrong if you used one.
