Need motor/esc rec for GP EP Yak 54
From what I've gathered here on the forum, the Rimfire 35-30-950 is an adequate motor, but I don't think I want to settle for "adequate". What are you guys running on your EP Yaks?
I'm considering the 35-30-1250 or 35-30-1450 Rimfires, or maybe a Hacker A20-20L or A30-22S?

Popular topic, eh?
After much study, the 950kv motor seems to put out the required wattage for a 3d machine, so either the rule of thumb is in error, or the folks that don't like it just can't get enough power out of anything. I may get the 1250 and try it out. That's what the throttle stick is for, right?

Thanks for the info. That's what I need. Do you have any idea how much thrust your are getting out of that setup? What's your all-up configuration weigh?

Hey WGRoper,
I did a watt and amp test on the Rimfire last nite and heres the results...With a 11X7 "SF" APC prop : 226 watts max and 24 Amps Max with a 3 cell Tpower 2100 lipo Thunder Power ( They claim 296 watts @ 20 amps). Much different from the claimed watt and amp readings they claim. You are forced to run this motor on a 4 cell to get the claimed results out of it as where the Hacker blows it away on a 3 cell @11.1 volts VS. 14.8 on the Rimfire to be competitive. The GP Yak 54 ready to fly with a 3 cell 2100 TP weighs 27.5 Oz's. A great 3d power to weight is 180 to 210 watts per lb. The rimfire equates to 8.22 watts per oz, 132 watts per lb....A little on the low side for good 3d performance. I did not watt test it with a 4 cell 2100 mah as I ran out of time but it is a much better performer with the 14.8 volts VS. 11.1 Volts.
We have three of theese planes......2 on the reccomended Rimfire 35-30-950 and one on a hacker A30-22. The Hacker is THE BEST setup if you ask me....But some of the Rimfires with a higher KV might work as well but I'm not impressed with the Rimfire 950KV at all.( Especially on 11.1 Volts!)

Thanks for the info. I saw that on the other GP Yak thread today as well. I might go with the Hacker, but if the 1250 does the job just as well, I'm satisfied as it'll be a bolt on installation on this plane.
BTW, what kind of test rig are you using to test motors and props? I might want to set up the same thing for me and my club buddies.

Yes you are going to need a bigger esc. I have the same motor and got 31 amps 311 watts with a 11x5.5 apc and with the recommended 10x7e 261 watts 27 amps.

Hey haz, how are you measuring the draw. I.E. do you have a wattmeter or are you using a vm? Just curious, I think I need to get a rig together to test my e-flight setups. What do you recommend?
