Rudder problems
 

Hi,
Today I flew my Yak 55 for the first time. It needed a far bit of right rudder to keep it tracking strait and I ended up trimming it out alot. When I landed it I saw just how much was needed. It was about 3/4 of and inch to the right. Is this normal? Is it just needed to compensate for the torque of the motor?

How about a picture with the radio ON, to show the actual amount of deflection.
My short-lived YAK 55 trimmed out with everything in line as it should be.

It may be the offset of the motor. My father has one that I'm still building for him. When I slid the gearbox on for the first time, I noticed that it was off about 3 degrees to the left. I needed to sand and shim the stick mount a little to get about 2 degrees of right thrust. That may be your problem. That, or your rudder may not be straight.

It's odd... everything looks straight.
Is the motor mounted with left thrust?

The rudder is square to everything else around it so its is odd. My only thought is that the motor is mounted wrong. Maybe with left trust. But the way its st up is the gear box has a square slot in it and you slid it onto a peice of wood that isnt really fastened down. When I go full throttle the wood twists and the motor moves to the right. It does not appear to have any left trust though. So I really dont know what it is.

It looks like you made a few mods on yours. What ones did you make and whats your set up?

Mods.. two aileron servos, and a pull-pull on the horizontal, and an outrunner with Lipo.
The e-Flite 400 outrunner FAR outperformed the kit motor, which is sadly typical for a Great Planes electric.
Added some tip skids to keep the pushrods/horns on the ailerons off the ground.

I took the plane out for a flight today and it flew a little better after i made sure the motor was on straight. I find though that the motor is weak. I am using little smaller battery then I should ( tanic 3 cell 830) but it should hover according to everything I have read. Reviews say that there is no need to upgrade to a brushless set up, but I find at full throttle going vertical it just climbs slowly. Did you find this also. Is that why you went brushless or did you just for more extreme preformance?

I've found that the brushed motors standard with this type of plane are anemic.
Going to brushless, and specifically a 400 inrunner or outrunner amplifies performance tremendously!
Swapping the brushed 370 in an e-Flite Tribute or Ultimate with a inrunner 400, using the same gear box and prop changes a mediocre performer to unlimited vertical.
I think I flew one flight with the Yak with the stock motor before changing it to the outrunner, direct, no gear box.
Unfortunately it's about $180 bux to do the full change.. Motor, ESC, battery, adds up quickly.

well i just got back from a flight. And I agree a brushless is needed for really extreme flight. But the stock motor it comes with gets the job done at a so-so level. I really don't understand why hobby companies cheap out and include a motor that is under par. Why not just cater to the people buy these people that want performance. They could probably pick up a little extra too.And the companies videos say,no need for a brushless conversion on this Yak, and so on and they show it hovering and stuff with the stock motor. I am angry because now i bought all the stuff for the stock set up and i'm out of cash for a brushless set up. Misleading.Period. I am new to E-flight and I didn't really think they would do this.
