typhoon 3d esc
Anyone had issues with the stock speed control? Ive only flown my aircraft once and it worked great. I bought some lipos and also had some for my heli to use but when I put the esc into lipo mode it surges and pulses above 80% throttle all the way to 100%. i talked to horizon and they said it was the batteries but if I try it in lipo mode with the stock battery it does the same thing. When I put it back to regular mode it acts normal with any battery. Horizon said to send it back and id rather not if its a setting issue.Any help would be greatly appreacated, Thanks

RE: typhoon 3d esc
It sure looks like it's an ESC problem. It sounds like the higher amperage causes the battery voltage to drop beyond the level acceptable by the ESC.
I would send the unit back and get a replacement as they suggested. |
RE: typhoon 3d esc
Funny you should post an ESC question. I took mine out for its six flight tonight and when I plugged it it, the esc just started smoking It made a horible ozone oder. I I could hear the foam sizzling somewhere inside the plane. It made my lipo very hot to the touch. They did not bulge, so I am hoping I did not fry my battery. It was so hot, the solder conection came loose where I conect the battery. How do I get to the esc to remove it? I dont know if I want to get a new one if they will cover it under warranty, or just get another brand 20a brushless controler and stick it in.

RE: typhoon 3d esc
To take out the esc, take off the cowling, unplug the motor, remove the battery and the it slides out through the battery area. Im going to change the connectors to something other than the bec style. then ill try it again. It still does it with the stock battery so ill have to send it back.

RE: typhoon 3d esc
I just received a new controller from Horizon after mine fried in the plane. My plane flew great on 2 stock battery runs. I added 2100 lipos and on the 5th lipo flight it started to stutter as I spun up the motor to take off. I looked down at the plane and smoke was pouring from inside the canopy. I quickly removed the lipo and went straight to the hobby shop. As I tore it down, the wires were melted off the ESC and the ESC was a chunk of plastic and board. Horizon sent new esc, motor, and gearbox. I purchased a Eflight 20 amp to use. When I picked up my stuff, the owner showed me 4 Typhoon ESCs he was sending back to Horizon for replacement. Some of them fried right on 1st power up. So, I have new ESC, and replaced all the servos. This thing became expensive real quick. I will never buy RTF again. Replacement airframes with equipment that I trust.. That is how I buy now.

RE: typhoon 3d esc
Well, I had to send the esc back. both my lhs wouldnt exchange it or any thing else. Talk about customer service. Ive been using both these places for 20 years. Im going to put in my jeti 40 amp for the time being and wait to hear from horizon. Who knows what theyll say.

RE: typhoon 3d esc
I have had exactly this same problem with my Ty3d. One day the motor just glitched on me in mid-flight, and luckily I managed to land it okay. Since I had servo control, I just assumed it was the motor and sent it in. After waiting for two weeks with no replacement, I just bought one, and lo and behold: exactly the same problem.
The glitch is that the prop chatters, and wobbles back and forth making a god awful noise while the motor, esc, and battery pack heat up exponentially. I actually melted the wrap on the stock battery diagnosing the problem. God help you if you use lipos, because my motor sparked and started smoking when I connected those. The bottom line is this: THE STOCK ESC IS CRAP. Because it sits in that INSULATED foam tunnel with no air really rushing past, it overheats and melts the logic between the third and seventh flight. Motor problems and shorts ensue. I replaced mine with the Eflite 20A esc which includes a thermal cutoff (if the Ty3d does, it sucks/is set way too high) and soft-start for the prop and motor. I've had no issues with my 2100mAh 11.1 LiPo, the eflite 20A, and the stock brushless motor since the replacement. Oh, and I widened the ventilation holes leading in and out of the ESC "chamber", as well as positioned it for a maximum breeze. I also fly without the cowl; doesn't seem to harm it, as long as you don't crash the prop into something, and then what good is flimsy plastic going to do anyway? On a related note, make sure you check your gearbox and see if the prop spins freely with the engine leads disconnected. When my Ty3d overheated because of the ESC, the heat from the motor warped the motor mount and was applying pressure between the rotor shaft gear and the pinion. All sorts of problems there... Works great now though, but after buying replacement ESC, motor, LiPos, and new Hitec HS-81's, I may as well have bought a more quality ARF kit, powerplant, and radio... |
RE: typhoon 3d esc
I put the HS-81's in mine as soon as I got the plane. Finished the build put in a 2100 lipo to set up the plane and smoked the ESC. Not even one flight. I put a Great Planes sliver 25A in. Works great. Sent the origional back, but I think it will end up as a paper weight when I get it back. I'll put it with the origional servos.

RE: typhoon 3d esc
I was a little disapointed after I talked to Horizon toady. Instead of sending back the ESC, they wanted me to send back the entire plane. I already destroyed the original box I got the plane in, and I am not comfortable including credit card information acording to the instruction manual.

RE: typhoon 3d esc
I did send the stock esc back but have yet to hear from them. With what they want for one maybe theyll exchange it for another brand. I did test the plane with a jeti 40 amp esc i just bought for my dash-8 project. It flew well on the stock battery. When I put in a lipo, look out. It hovered (as best that i can) at just a hair over 1\2 throttle. It was 20 deg out so I didnt even run it all the way down, but I really like the plane so far. Ill update after I talk to horizon.

RE: typhoon 3d esc
This is a problem that I encountered straight out of the box. I bought a typhoon as my first four-channel plane and was really stoked to throw it together and get it in the air. I could not even get my plane to go all the way through the radio setup before it locked up. The prop never spun once. Horizon asked that I pull out the electrics and send them back, but I had, literally, just taken it out of the box so I took it back to my LHS and got a cash refund. Bummer. As I already have three other electric planes I think I will just redirect the money toward a Blade CP.
Not sure about you guys, but I don't mind spending money on RTF so long as everything works. It makes me nuts to buy faulty products. Chuck |
RE: typhoon 3d esc
The sad thing is this is a pretty good air frame. Its just a shame that the speed controls are flawed. Since this is their first brushless speed control, I think they just rushed it into production. I have never heard of any of the other planes they sell have this much trouble from the electronics. I have a PZ Cub that has about 300 flights on it and its just now showing the brushed motor and gear box is starting to wear. Since spring is getting here, and I can take out my big planes, I guess I will take my time and get a good speed control, and go ahead and upgrade the servos. Does anyone know of another name brand motor that will drop right in and is a direct power replacement?

RE: typhoon 3d esc
Well, horizon cant find the esc I sent back. Good thing I sent it delivery confimation. I was told to expect a replacement thats being shipped today. Im going to sell it real cheap. on the other hand I just tried a castle creations 35a esc last night and accually had the same type of issues. Depending on the battery used it would give full power and then start pulsing real fast. Like a current limiter. PLUGGED THE 40A JETI BACK IN AND HAD NO ISSUES WITH ANY BATTERY. Damn capslock! So I called CC and they said its a battery current issue and it cant keep up with the esc and motor. They also said that the jeti has more resitance than thier controller and thats why it does that. My TP 1320 3s works great at full power for about 30 sec then pulses, reduce to power and wait, full power comes back. That battery says it can handle 17amp con and 27a burst. CC also said that would go away with the 2100 Tp Im waiting to arrive. ive posted the 35a CC for sale in the ads. Any Idea on how many amps the motor and 13inch prop pull? i read 13 in RC Flyer mag and someone posted here it was about 17a. Im goin to look for another esc and continue to fly.

RE: typhoon 3d esc
are you running it stationary on full throttle for 30 seconds? If so, you may be overheating the ESC and motor, and bumping into the thermal wall...
|
RE: typhoon 3d esc
I thought that as well but the esc was on the outside of the plane and the motor didnt have the cowling on. The battery was just warm and the esc had no change in temp that I could tell.

RE: typhoon 3d esc
I recieved the replacement esc from HH a couple days ago. they sent it after they lost the one returned. i havent hooked it up as its for sale cheap on ebay. Oh well I put my jeti back in so it can fly. im looking at a 25 amp ss great planes for a replacement.

RE: typhoon 3d esc
I picked up an Eflight esc today. After I got all the wires ran and things soldered up, I plugged it up and the servos just went nuts. I hope it did not fry my reciever as well. In the morning I will try another reciever and see if thats the problem.

RE: typhoon 3d esc
I had that happen with my jeti esc, I had to reverse the bec plug to the throttle channel and it worked normal. Just flip it around. Maybe check the polarity with a volt meter to find out. I flew my typhoon today with my jeti esc and i love it. i t would climb vertical without stopping, its stock with the 13inc prop and a 3cell lipo.

RE: typhoon 3d esc
It turns out that I did a really dumb thing. I had my tx on pcm instead of ppm. After buying a new rx and pulling everything back apart I found my mistake. It is together and working great. I look forward to the winds calming down so I can try it out. The next thing I plan is to add an Eflight brushless motor. I am just curiou if it would give it more power or if its the same size motor. I also thought about trying an APC 12x4 SF prop as well. Has anyone tried one of these?
|
RE: typhoon 3d esc
I wonder if eflites park 400 style would be any good in the stock gearbox? Iv ealso thought of cutting the prop shaft to use an adapter to play with prop sizes.
|
RE: typhoon 3d esc
That motor will fit and will work good, I just wonder if it is more powerful or the same size. I need to pick up an elevator servo now. I went to screw in the servo arm and the screw would not tighten. I dont want to chance it with flying it that way.

Heres some pics of thismorning, Jeti esc on stock motor, 3 cel lipo 2100 from His and Hers hobbies. It hovers just a hair over 1/2 power. Im looking for some better servos and maybe ill change radios in time. ill replace the motoer setup If this one takes a dump.

RE: typhoon 3d esc
Olds455,
This is off topic, but do you OWN an Olds 455? I did. Loved it. Had to junk it at 200,000 miles ... ashtrays got full. [&:] |
RE: typhoon 3d esc
yup, Runs 12s in the quarter, My camero runs 12s aswell.

RE: typhoon 3d esc
I am using a GP Electrify 1500 3s lipo. It makes it pretty tail heavy but with little expo its not too much of a problem. I might pick up a TT 2100 but I dont want to drop 74.00 on a new batt. right now. But I am debating on using a Hitec 51 or 81 on the elevator.
