Good question...I'd like to here what you guys have to say on the matter...I'll admit I have been known to call 3Ws ewey.. lol
But the AI series 3W 150 looks very sweet... (blue cylinders)

Both are excellent engines. It is like comparing Ford vs Chevy. neither really has an advantage, but they do have faithful and loyal fans. I personally fly 3W and have loved my engines and the support I get from both Bobby at Cactus and Gehardt at Aircraft International. When I was in the market for a 150, I bought it based on the slight weight savings of the new one, and the conversations I had with Bobby and Gehardt. I had a hard time getting a hold of Dave at Desert Aircraft, but I know that he provides excellent service as well.
The only real advice I can give you is that no matter what engine you buy, go ahead and get the tuned cans instead fo the regular mufflers. If you fly IMAC, they are already becoming the standard. If you just fly for sport, your club with appreciate the fact that you are more quiet and - as a bonus - you get about 200-300 RPMS over the regular mufflers. Again, my preference is the 3W cans because they have a cross-over tube to make the mid-range smoother and less "pipey", but DA sells a really nice set of cans as well.

I too fly 3W. Cactus has always treated me and my buddies well. We all fly 3W around this area. DA is also a top notch motor. I really couldn't say one was better than the other. What I would suggest is that you fly what your local flyers are flying. It really helps to have the support.
The new 3W 150 is one heck of a machine though!!!!

PS - BTW, we all fly with just the Johnson or Supersonic mufflers. You just have to love that rumble!!! Tuned pipes and cans on a 150 class motor is like riding a Harley that sounds like a Honda Goldwing.... It just ain't right!

Depends on prop and set up. Expect around 100lbs+ of static thrust. They will hover/torque roll a 40% plane at abut half throttle. Basically, you only ever use full throttle on uplines and some 3D stuff. If you fly full throttle straight and level, you will rip the prop - sounds really cool, but is now frowned upon.
I agree with Bean - I like the sound of the short mufflers and 2 bladed props, but since I also like to compete in IMAC, I have to quiet it down.
If you are looking for the most power, go with tuned cans and a good 2 blade prop like a MSC 32X10.

My buddy HT just bought a new 3W-150 based on a strong sales pitch from Bobby. He hasn't fired it up yet. Couldn't talk him into getting a ZDZ-160 because he wanted something that would bolt right up to the Radiocraft Extra ARF. I reckon the ZDZ would perform as well as the 3W or DA, based on the strong performance of the 80 single. Also with the $300-400 saved, you could pay for a set of tuned cans. And it weighs 7 lbs bare.

Oh, you must be talking about the DA then Jreb. I thought someone on here might know what the IMAC group is saying about which engine is running better in the mid RPM band. Seems to be a concern since 3-blade props are becoming common-place with the new Sound Task Force. Shorter blade + lower RPM = less DB's. But I'm sure they are all the same.

It's Ford vs Chevy for sure..
Both the 3W and DA 150's put out HUGE power for their size. The weight difference is silly to even be concerned with since most airplanes wind up needing more weight in the nose anyway.
I fly DA because of the service I've received from Dave Johnson over the years. He and his staff are a cut above IMO. I also think the DA is a better engine than the 3W but that's personal opinion and I'm sure you'll get plenty of people who will take the other side as well.
The mid-range thing is all setup. If you take the time to setup your engine.. there is no mid-range thing to worry about.

Let me just say this..... All of the Jags get their motors out of "Jaguar" plants. And if you want to boil it down to ownership... GM owns a BIG portion of both Honda and Toyota but that doesn't make GM any better.
