I'm just about to order Glens 30% CAP232. What size engine should I be looking at for 3D, from what I have read the zenoah62 isnt really quite enough ? I was considering the Fuji64 from Just Engines as its a similar weight but with a bit more power (so Just Engines claim) - is anyone using this combination ?

Well........... I met a guy on the scale aerobatics forum and he was using a zenoah 64. he was tail touching it. Spose the fuji would be better but theres the factor of weight, both theese engines are heavily modified chainsaw and lawnmower engines which are real weighty. I would pay more, buy a lighter engine with more power. i always say if going to do it, do it properly.
Hope this helps (proberbly not
)

I dont think the weight is that much of an issue - the cap has such a short nose that it needs a hefty lump like a zenoah, unless you start lightening the back, but I dont think theres much scope for that on his kits.
An alternative is a ZDZ80, but its a question of money, and also getting the noise down to 82db for our field

mmm true. my mate has the 68" one. super tiger 23 thingy in it. In answer to the ZDZs noise, put on a tuned pipe or throttle pipe. anyway, is that a twin????

You can get a ZDZ 80 single cylinder from France for £315.The cheapest ypou can get by miles. I think postage to a UK address is £15.
I did a lot of research on this because i was very close to getting a 33% Edge 540T from Alan Hawes.
You can find the french website under dealers on www.zdz.cz
I think you can get KS silencers for it from Als Hobbies or another shop.
I have never owned anything bigger than a 180 size motor, but the 82db limit shouldnt be much of a problem because the motor pitch is much less annoying. Because of this, most clubs dont bother asking to noise test you, because in the air its very quiet. You probably wont go over half throttle in flight with a ZDZ 80 anyway(50lbs static on a 20ish pound model) so it should rarely get past 82 anyway with proper throttle management.

Chris, i've flown a 30% on a ZG 62 (belongs to Richard Gale) and it was fine. Plenty of power. Also, Paul Carr does unlimited 3d with his, again using the Zenoah. He said more power would be nice, but the 62 is enough, bear in mind that the ZG 62 gives unlimited vertical performance to models in excess of 20lb, and the 30% cap can be as low as 16lb.
The Fuji would be great. Remember that a pipe on these size motors has significant power increase.
Krumscheid silencers are available from www.moki.co.uk .
Or if you waited, Glen is releasing a 35% Extra soon!

Save your cash for the zdz.
I have just fired up a zdz80 single, straight out of the box its
pulling 6900 on a menz 24x10.
after a couple of gallons move up to a 26" prop.
This would be utterly limitless on a glens kit.

3W 75 powermaster is great for the Glens Extra. It'll put the overall weight up to about 19lb but with 7.5hp it don't make much difference. A guy in high peak club has got one and the performance is just stupid. Turns a 26x8 menz at about 6.5 grand!!

thanks for all the replies.
If as Luke says I can get the zdz for £315 (sounds like a brilliant deal) then I'm very tempted. Although it almost sounds like too power much really.
I looked at 3w but the weight is an issue at our field, our strip is quite small so getting it down may become a bit of a problem unless the wind is in the right direction.
And no I cant wait for the Extra ! From what Glen was saying on the phone its not going to be ready for while yet.
I'll just have to get that one next year

If like me you are rushing to order a zdz 80 from France for £315 , thay are £95 more than the quoted figure of £315 and not such a good deal. If they can be found for around £315 I would really like to Know where. Was in the CZ republic last month and they are £380 there. Credit card back in wallet!

I had a look back at the website and it seems that they have dramatically increased their prices since i last looked at their website.
www.topmodel.fr
The ZDZ 60 rv is now 510 euros
previously the 80rv worked out at 473 euros.
Any doubters can go and ask Brian Colgough of Rhyl and district MFC(Welsh 3d- do you know him?). Thats where i first learned about the cheaper french pricing.
I wonder why the price has gone up?
My fault really. I should have re checked the price on their website before opening my big mouth!

I heard that you and brains were looking at EMHW Katanas.
have you had a look at Alan hawes' kits?
He lives quite close to you, and he does a 40% Edge 540T with pebuilt wings for £600odd and a 33% for £395.(The last time i checked
lol)
He also does a nice Ultimate- Mr Colgough has had one for a while. It has unlimited vertical at 1/4 throttle with a ZDZ 80.
the kits just need bigger surfaces for 3D.
I think that when i go the giant aerobatics route it will probably be via him- cheapest prices around.

Alan Hawes kits do not interest me. They are lovely models don't get me wrong, but until I either fly one myself or see one doing 3d I'm not interested.
I have flown their Giles and to be honest it was pants for 3d, but did fly extremely accurately, an IMAC dream!
We were looking at the Katanas and still are, it's just whether or not we can be bothered building, having both just built models I think we're bored of looking at balsa and plastic already!
At the moment my eyes are on the H9 33% cap and C-ARF Extra. I'm definately getting a large scale even if Deano doesn't, but I think he is. Managed to put him off the Majestic anyway, and he's ordering an H9 Funtana now, and I've just bought another heli!

Id like to get into large scale. the smaller comp arf extra looks very apertising in the Fantasy Red/Yellow scheme.
Id proberbly get it in a plain white scheme and design my own scheme. if i pay all thet money i want it personalized :rainfro:
Heres the heli id get
