BME 50 or FPE 2.4

I have a Extra 300 on order. The spec's are 78" wingspan and 14-16 lb. weight. I would like to be able to hover, torque roll and 3D. Would the FPE 2.4 accomplish this or do I have to use the heavier, but more powerful BME 50? I originally thought about the FPE 2.4 to keep the overall wing loading down for 3D, but it may not have enough thrust to pull out of a hover. I would appreciate any advice or experience you can pass on.

Yes, the FPE 2.4 works best with a 20X10. I know, I have two of them. They're great engines with excellent power to weight. However it's not going to give you 3D performance on a 16 pound airplane. Go with the BME 50. I have one on a Sig Sukhoi and it's got awesome power. Unlimited vertical at half throttle. It's not even broken in yet! <BG>

The BME 50 should be compared with a brison 3.2, the FPE 2.4 is a good engine but that's not even in the same league as the BME 3.0ci. The DA50 should be a better comparison but that's not out for a quite some time. The BME is lighter, packs a punch, great engine, you won't be disappointed. For a 16lb plane you'll need the extra power for 3D. Good luck with your project.

You didn't say which Extra. This is the BME 44 on my 15 lb 8 oz Patrick Extra. I finished the plane in late November and havent really yet flow it much. The power seems great, but the BME 50 would be better. This is an extremely low time 44, not broken in yet. I expect it will continue to develop more power.
