Default MODELTECH Magic Extra with OS 40

OK, I just bought my Magic Extra. Looks like a great plane. Now... all I need is to fix it up.

In the mean time, I might as well ask this question. I have this OS 40 FX, and I want to hover the MODELTECH Magic Extra. Problem is, I don't know what propeller to buy. 12.25 x 3.75 propeller doesn't seem to be in stock... What propeller should I use?

Also, I want to buy another engine just for this plane (and other future planes). I was thinking of a Magnum .53 or a Super Tigre .51, between the prices of the engines is a $10 difference.

Hope to hear from you.

I would use a 11x4 APC prop.

A agree with Firebolt but try an APC 11.5-4 also. I have that running on an OS 40FP and it turns it great. Probably even better on a 40FX.

The 12.25-3.75 is WAY TO MUCH!!! My 46FX can barely turn this prop. Very sluggish. This prop is better for 50 sized and above engines.

OK Thanks a lot!

Err... it seems like there's a lack of 1 more aileron hinge... do you guys have 3 aileron hinges for each aileron? Seem to have 3 [&:].

Yup, 3 per aileron is the norm. A 11X4 prop should do the trick. I run one on my sons Magic extra with a 46 la and it does well. On thing though, re-enforce the wing where the bolts pass through with a piece of lite ply glued over the balsa block. I didn't and his just blew apart while flying across the sky after some very aggressive tumbleing. The look on a 9 y.o.'s face after that happened was not good. I am fixing it though so he will be a happy camper. Sometimes a plane can be built too light.

Steve,
Does that 46LA have enough poke to actually hover the Magic? Did you use standard or mini radio gear? My Magic is still in the box and I've got a choice of 3 engines to power it with......

Good luck with your magic, I had a few of them with a Irvine .53. Just watch out landing the plane the construction is crap! any hard landing in grass will rip the fuse in half.

There are threads out there that tell you to beef up the plane. I used 3/16 square balsa and thin CA. I just ran the square stock right next to the main beams all along the fuse length, anywhere I could. I doubled up where I could. I used sheet balsa on the fuse walls next to the landing gear so it would have stronger wall support in case of hard landing. I put extra thin CA anywhere I could reach.

I had a VERY hard landing one time from a wind gust and you could hear it hit hard. It just broke a prop and bent the gear a tiny bit. The fuse was perfect. So reinforce the fuse and you will be a happy camper.

For $99 this is an awesome flyer. I'm using the Irvine .53 too. Nice combo.

yup three planes, they work good for backyard combat.

I'm really not into beefing up anything on these planes, since i fly them in a cow field with rutts and crap all over the place removal of the landing gear was the best beef up for this $99 special, just go dead stick and bring her in nice and soft. keep in mind this is a plane I don't bring to the field! it's just a "i'm bord" or "half time on sunday football" cow chaser.

SO sad that over here the LHSs don't stock Irvine.

About beefing up the plane... I don't quite understand... [&:]

Some people say the CG should be 5" back. Is this much better?

1) Order it from JustEngines.com online
2) Beef up means to make it stronger
3) 5 inches is too much. Stay between 4 and 4 3/4. Mine is about 4 1/4.
