I presently have the following engines at my disposal: Saito180, YS120NC and YS120SC(I think). I just tached the two YS120s on YS20/20, APC17x6. With the NC I got 8800 rpm, with the SC I got 9300 rpm. I don't know what the Saito 180 would tach at. I have the Saito180 in a Cermark Pitts that I want to sell, but I don't know if I will sell with or without engine. One of my YS120s will go in a Jerry's Spoiler, and I want to get a 120 size Katana S. My question is, are my YS120s strong enough for unlimited vertical and 3D on 11 lbs planes, or should I keep my Saito180 and expect better thrust from that engine? According to the Thrust HP Calculator I am in the 19-22 lbs thrust range, but I know this software is a bit on the positive sidie he he.
I am asking because it would probably be easier for me to sell my Pitts with the engine.

I don't have the answer to your question but just let me throw this in the mix. I had a YS 1.20 AC on an Ultra Stick 1.20 and a fellow flier had the same plane with a Saito 1.80. We were both swinging APC 16 x 8's and the YS seriously kicked but on the Saito in every aspect. Just my observations.

OK..... Saitos are the greatest, most powerful, most wonderful, lightest, sweetest, out of all the engines in the world, Saito's are one of them!

I would have to say go with the Satio 180 over the YS 120 SC. Satios really comes to life with higher nitro. I use 30% heli in my satio 91S. If you do not mind a two stroke look at the OS 1.60 FX. It will out pull both these engines on 5% nitro fuel.

I have both the 180 saito and the 120 fz. Both run fantastic !!
The ys transitions better ....is smoother running...and has a far Superior carboration system !!! But there is ** no way** it develops the same torque as the saito 180 !!

Well, I may have found a solution. I may just sell the Saito and one of my YS120 engines, and buy me a YS140L. The 140L should have all the power I need, and the good traits of the YS. Yes, it's a bit of a shaker, but so is the Saito180.

For an 11 pound plane, you would be best off with something like the Y.S. 140. The new DZ is said to be alot simpler (feul system), and alot more powerful, but is expensive.
Other than that, I'd say that the Ys and the saito are equal in power, so just pick the lightest one, or the one you prefer. My vote is with the YS, for its power, idle, transition,weight, etc.........although I have seen Saitos at the field, I have never owned one, so I wouldn't really be sure. But the YS's are very hard to beat.

Per the original question, I have the Saito 180, and I run the apc 17-6 with Omega 25% nitro with 4 ounces of Klotz synthetic per gallon, and my tach reading is a whopping 9,890rpm. I was shocked with that number, and it's on a H9 cap, probably in the high 12 to 13lb range, and I can take off in about 25ft, pull to a vertical line, and it will truly pull out of sight. All the power you'll ever need and then some. The beauty is, as somebody else mentioned, all that torque. The downline breaking on this prop with the 180 makes the back side of cuban 8s and other such maneuvers a thing of beauty. Makes it much easier to fly a precision sequence. With the 25%, the transition is more then acceptable for any 3d including the fine transition needed for harrier landings. Fuel it up, set it, and forget it. My only complaint, it likes to gulp fuel.
