Default OK 2 TAIL TOUCH NO MORE 9

I am surprised this has not hit here yet and if it did, sorry for the re-post.

The Rule #9 in the AMA code has been over turned.

I do not know all the specific details, however it was a "tacky" debate and was overturned by 2 votes.

It was an effort by many people and I am sure that many fellow RCU'ers help with this.

Thanks.

I wonder if it will still be up to the cd to allow tail touching at ama sanctioned events. we are measuring how far we can drag the side of rudder along the ground, 10 feet 5 inches so far.

Pizza,

I want to see a video of that. At my field, a few of us do WTT&Gs (wing tip touch & gos), using .15 powered combats with the throttle locked WAO!

Pizza, I like the way you think.

As it should be, it is a club/field issue.

AMA no longer see's the reason to have a rule, so your club should not either.

last year during a spirit of utah show team ama sanctioned event we had a pilot meeting befor our show. the cd told us we could not fly behind the flight line where we were standing for safety reasons. there was about 30 feet of grass behind me and a short fence, then grand stands loaded with people. as part of my routine I like to come straight down flat then pop it into hover. the wind was blowing hard directly into my face. I decided on my own with satety in mind that I would bring it around behind me crossing the flight line so as to be into wind instead of risking a downwind pop and hover which is possible but more dangerous. I used about 10 feet of the 30 feet of grass, the cd ran over and gave me and my spotter a stearn warning but did not ask me to land. after I tried to explain that in this windy condition it was actually safer to come in from behind, he did not understand as may not invite me back this year. when it comes to safety, rules, and regs we need 3d safety officers not cd's that do not understand 3d and what is going on. also I was required to stand in one spot and not walk out onto runway like those toc guys.

IF the wind is in your face, then it is also blowing toward the crowd. In such a situation then going behind you is even more dangerous than with the wind in the other direction. If you can't understand why what you did is potentially dangerous, then I would be far happier for you not to be flying.

While I am sure that you were in full control at all times, things can go wrong. With only 20 feet between your plane and the crowd, and the wind blowing towards the crowd, it could turn nasty very quickly.

I would rather take my chances flying into wind at 1/2 throttle, than to fly downwind toward the crowd with no throttle, it would have been impossible to compromise and come in from the side or walk out onto runway since my partner was flying to my left at the same time. I guess I should have just skipped the hovering routine.

this is exactly what the cd was thinking, but if you have ever had a down wind dead stick landing you will understand that if a plane is flying toward the crowd with no throttle and 20mph tail wind, and engine sudenly quits - you will have no control to turn the plane - it will land very fast half way up into crowd. if this happens with the plane facing away from crowd and into the wind, it will drop straight down onto grass - scary but nobody gets hurt.

I am not saying that you should not do the manouver, just not come in so close the crowd. From your description, I understood you to fly parallel to the crowd, then turn into wind ie away from the crowd to pull into the hover in front of you. Perhaps I was wrong in this.

However if this is what you did, why need to go behind you? Just pop into the hover 10 feet further away from yourself and the crowd. You may need to juggle things to avoid any conflict with yourself and other pilots or planes, but I'm sure you could handle that.

Hovering/torque rolling is always a crowd pleaser, so if it can be done safely, I dont see any problem with it.

Anyway we are straying off topic here. Sorry my fault.

Where are you getting this info? I looked on the AMA website and could not find anything on the subject.
