I have the UCD and can vouch for it beaing a nice flying ship...It will do some of the 3d moves but not all. It will not perform a decent knife edge, and won't harrier for crud, but for a person begining 3d, it is an excellent plane..
As far as the mayhem goes, I have heard alot of good things, it will do maneuvers the UCD won't. I am selling one of my Saito 100's to buy the Mayhem (and replace my UCD)...

I have flown a friends u-c-do with 91ys and own a modified mayhem. Even with all the mods to the mayhem I would not buy another or do I consider it above average!
I'd stay away from both of these planes !!...I think there are better ones out there in this general size.....[

The UCD .46 is a great 3D trainer. Not the best 3D aircraft out there by any means, but it's great to learn on. Gotta get the CG waayyyyy back to be able to do some of the stuff really well.
IMO, you want to put a Saito .91 in it... There are a few guys with Saito 1.00s in them.
If you do a search, there are pretty large threads here somewhere for both the UCD and the Mayhem, these should help you a lot.

Yes I read them but I would like the perspective of a pilot who have flown both, and can point the advantages and disadvantages of both. I like a very responsive plane, and the 3D side is important but no critical to me, I like the kind of pattern lines of these planes and the posibility of doing sharp snaps, hold a nice knife edge, etc, etc, propably I should be looking to other planes who knows, but these two are like candy for my eyes.

jucava,
I own both the UCD 46 w/a saito 100 on it and a mayhem with a YS 120 for power.
I am very happy with both the planes, however, here are a few differences you might want to consider. NOVAflier is right on describing the performance of the 46 UCD, but it's a great plane for the 3D beginner. The mayhem has some advantages over the UCD, one being the obvious, it's bigger, and it's more stable in the wind.
The quality of the Mayhem is better, especially the covering and the hardware that is provided. Mayhems rod linkages are 440 not the 256 size.
For me the Mayhem performs the majority of 3D maneuvers, at least in my repertoire of maneuvers, easier than the UCD. And I still have not been able to get a decent knife edge out of the UCD no matter how far I move the CG back, however, with all that weight in the back the hovers are almost automatic
. The one thing the UCD has way over the Mayhem is rolls, man on high rates they are blinding. That and the dual elevator servos in the rear, gives you some other options when using a computer radio.
The Mayhem handles high speeds better than the UCD, when you start getting any flutter from the tail surfaces on the UCD back off quick because if you don't the horizontal stab will come apart. Of course 3D planes are not built for speed.
Fortunately for you, the altitude you fly in will not factor in as greatly as it does for me, you will get great performance from smaller engines, although I think the saito 100 would work great for you in either one.
I believe you will enjoy either one, but I give the nod to the Mayhem.

The Mayhem is certainly a good looking plane. It think it's one of the better looking planes available. I would like to try one. I own a 60 sized UCD and like the majority of posters would recommend it as a good plane to learn 3D on. It's not perfect and the knife edge is it's biggest weakness. But it's easy to fly for sure.
I'd consider getting a mayhem for my next bird, but in all honest probably wouldn't. I rather go with a large Edge 540 with maybe a small gasser engine. The 120-180 sized 4 strokes are nearly as expensive as a nice gasser and cost a ton more when it comes to fuel costs. Just my opinion.

Thanks guys for the info, Coomarlin you just mention my other option, I was thinking in a 60, 90 or 120 size Edge 540T you know to have more fuselage("T").

Also, I have dramatically improved the KE on mine but you have to go for it with you mixes.
I have a TON of up elevator to rudder mix and adverse roll coupling (Rudder to aileron) mix in it. With the engine upgrade to a 1.2 it will knife edge loop with authority also now that the coupling is better and I dont have to work quite so hard at steering the plane. Its not perfect yet, but Im getting real close to mixing it out.
