Default Questions about hovering

Some questions about hovering and R/C club fields:

1. Does your R/C club allow fixed wing aircraft hovering over or near the runway, the runway approach or departure paths when other aircraft are flying?

2. Are there any club rules or guide lines that apply to hovering?

3. Do you have a blacktop runway or a less defined grass runway area?

4. Does your R/C field have a designated helicopter hovering area?

My field only allows helicopter training after 2 years straight membership because they apparatnly had alot of problems with large amounts of the public wanting to fly helicopters.

There is a small patch for felicopter training and when you have you lisence you can go and fly in the nomrla fixed wing airspace.

The field has very stingent safety rules because we are in London and the public are everywhere, the land is expensive to rent so we have a very small landing area which is grass to land on, if you can land at my field you can land anywhere!

There as of yet no rules regarding 3D including hovering maoevers but if you were hovering near your face like the experts they might tell you off even though you are fully capable.

You can hover over the landing area if you want but its ommon courtesy not to, piloyts must shout out TAKING OFF, LANDING, DEADSTICK and LOW PASS so taht all flyers know what they are going to do, this is especially helpful when you are landing and there is a heli or 3Der in the way.

Hope this helps, you can ask more questions if you like.

Hi 8178,

I will try to answer your questions below.

ORIGINAL: 8178

Some questions about hovering and R/C club fields:

1. Does your R/C club allow fixed wing aircraft hovering over or near the runway, the runway approach or departure paths when other aircraft are flying?

Yes it does, however this is not an issue as most of the time only one person is in the air at one time. In addition, only a few of us in my club want to hover and we try to do this at times when the field is empty or very low in turn out. If by chance there are other planes in the air while I am hovering, I will go to the far end of the runway to hover and also watch out for the other plane flying and keep out of their way.

2. Are there any club rules or guide lines that apply to hovering?

No, not needed in our case.

3. Do you have a blacktop runway or a less defined grass runway area?

Defined grass runway.

4. Does your R/C field have a designated helicopter hovering area?

No, the heli guys do pretty much the same as what I wrote above.

Just a little common sense will help you here. I would say to simply not hover during busy times like Saturday mornings and afternoons. Save it for less busy times. It hogs airspace near the runway and can cause midairs. I always wait until the airspace clears before I do any hovering. Just be considerate and you'll do fine. Also I wouldn't hover very close to me if other people are around as it endangers them (and myself). Why wait for people to make rules when you can simply use caution (and less rules will be necessary).
