I bought an 18/10 apc for my moki 1.8, I cant believe how tapered these props are, very pointy at tips, anyone have experience with these?

I just got three 12.25x3.75 APCs from Morris. They look like they are made for laying open my hand or arm!

Yea I've seen those large APCs...they look very different from the normal props. Too ugly for me!

I use Carbon fiber on the larger planes, but everything else is APC and they seem to have more RPMs, more power and last longer. Who cares what they look like?

I have used 16/6, 16/8, 17/6, 18/8, 20/10 and 22/8.
I loved them all. There may be better propellers but for the price they are great. The only prop that I have used that I liked better is a Mejzlick CF Propeller.

I'm using an APC 15/6 on my newest 3D plane (YS .91) and it works great. I've been using APC props since a pattern flyer first introduced them to me about 10 years ago, and they've always performed better than others I've tried.

On the big 4-strokes in particular, they (or something similarly rigid, like carbon fiber) are almost a necessity. When I tried a Master Airscrew (nylon) prop of the same size on the .91, you could see the prop visibly warp at about mid RPMs and above, and SERIOUSLY vibrate. I thought it might damage the engine or vibrate the plane into confetti, so I replaced it with the APC, and now it runs smooooothly.

Also, in general, at any diameter I've used, from 10" to 16", they are obviously more efficient, with visible results the first time you fly them.

I know what you mean I order an 18 8 from my local hobby shop and when it came in I was disappointed with how it looked! just like you described! I also had a 13*6 and it looked the same! I wish someone could tell my why some sizes are shaped so different than others. I have been to the apc web site http://www.apcprop.com/ but it does not explain why in only some sizes they are pointed. Some one help please!

Propellers are usually shaped a particular way to reduce, noise, drag, and increase efficiency. I would imagine that a pointed tip will loose some efficiency but reduce noise since less displacement is needed at the higher speeds.

As I recall, a couple of years ago, APC stated they were going to stop making large one-piece props because of a few large props failed at the hub and they couldn't find the failure mode (they believed the design margin at the prop root was more than adequate and didn't understand why a prop would shuck a blade like that). If memory serves, they were talking larger than 18" or 20"...I don't recall exactly where they drew the line. All this stuff was on their web page some time ago...

However, I noticed that they have started making the big props again (perhaps because the hobby is moving toward ever larger planes and thus larger props). There isn't anything on the web site anymore, but it would appear that their answer was to beef up the prop root at the hub at the widest possible point. If you look at their latest large props from the front, the blades meet the hub nearly tangent to the hub diameter, providing much more material where they were failing before. I have to admit, they are pretty gruesome, but fortunately most of this extra girth is hidden in a spinner. I don't think the tips are all that different, but with such a massive hub it looks different...

I have several 18 and 20" APC props. Both multi-piece and one piece. They are very efficient and quiet compared to a lot of the "clubs" out there. Run it, enjoy the performance of your model, and keep your fingers/hands/arms out of the prop. Just like you would any other prop

As far as being ugly, how can you tell when your engine is running? Remember, form follows function.

I guess that is where I don't see the difference. While I will agree the blade root is bigger than Zinger or MA, the hub is actually smaller. I have had stress fractures on my propellers. My latest propeller had over 45 flights on it and I changed it. I am always landing in the tall grass and the grass has taken its toll on the propeller tips. Other than that, I have not had any problems with APC props. I would love to use CF but I can get 2 APC for 1 CF.

i use apc props all the time on my super stick 60
and on my big stick 40 i think that you can tell a big differance between apc and zingers, master air screws and whatever you may have

The prop you're describing is probably the 18" narrow blade prop. They also make a wide blade prop. I'm pretty sure the narrow blade was made for large scale air racing (T-6 style racing, I think!). The narrow blades allow for higher rpm's.
I currently use the 18-8 narrow blade on my IMAC plane. The pull is excellent. The only downside is the lack of any real downline braking. I've tried the wide blade as well, but it has quite a bit more mass in the blades and just didn't turn as well as I would have liked.
Just so you know, I currently use a Saito 180 with 30% high performance heli fuel---Excellent power! In my last plane, I used the same props with a Supertigre 2300 on 15% omega fuel---very good power as well!

i also ordered 18-10 &18-8 apc props, and was kinda shocked when i saw them. these props have no narrow blade designation (n after number) like their pylon racing props.cost 35$ bucks apiece, any one know if their worth it? havent tried mine yet. thanks rob m

can i use a master airscrew 11*10 prop on my OS 70 Surpass......... or is it bad for the egine with 15% nitro fuel. the recommended on the OS website is 11*9 .......would it effect my engine is i use this with a higher pitch ? ? ?

i flew my tai ji witha 12*6 prop didnt enjoy it ! gonna see if the engine is set properly or not....... give it to the shop and then put it on a 11"*10 prop

OK guys next time i make a prop run to the factory i'll ask about blade tip shape because the factory is 2 miles from my house the owner flies at the same field as me so i may even see him sooner but i believe he is at the nats now

I use APC's on most of my planes from .40 to 1.40 size 10" to 18" and have had nothing but good results and above all durability. Chunk those Master Airscrews except for one... the wood Simitar series. These are very similar in shape as the APC but they have one distinct advantage... weight. A comparable APC in a 18" prop weights about 6 oz and a Simitar is about 2.5 oz. Lighter weight means its easy for the engine to spin up. Dont forget to rebalance if you are already on the back side of the C.G. Unless you need nose weight then switching to a composite prop is a good place to make weight rather then using lead.

geistware.. 35.99 can is around 20 $ us , gettin burned is a way of life up here eh! actually im not complaining about price , beats a 50$ wood prop thats trash 2nd flight from hitting a clump of grass!! i can cut grass all day with my apcs!! just wondering about new shape( i have an old 18-6 apc that has curved blades like the smaller sizes) does apc make 22-24" props for the big planes? can,t even order from Lhs ( was told the 18" were largest available)...
