Default Dave Patrick Ultimate 40

I'm seriously thinking about purchasing a Dave Patrick Ultimate 40 size plane in hopefully the next month. I was wondering if anyone has this airplane and what they think about it? Is it capable of doing various 3D manuevers. What size powerplant do you have on it? I was thinking about a 46fx.

Search the forum. There has been a ton of discussion on this plane.

I owned two of these planes. I stuffed an OS50SX in it. I kept getting in trouble at the airfield because of noise. I tried both a bisson and slimline pitts. Neither of them would get the engine down under 100 db. I had to prop the plane such that I lost the screaming vertical.

I would go with a good four stroke in this airplane. A YS 63S would meet noise restrictions and give awsome performance.

Change the covering out on the bottom of the plane. Replace with bars. This plane gets small quickly and it is very easy to loose orientation on it.

Watch you speed with this plane. I had a top right aileron explode in flight due to flutter. Yes, the hinges were sealed. I believe it was do to very slight play in the interconnect between the bottom and top aileron.

Other modification I did included a carbon fibre landing gear and changing the position of the elevator servo in order to take differential out of the elevator.

Have fun with this one. The next ultimate I get will be bigger and easier to see.

I've had 2 of the 40 size and still have a slighty damaged 120 size. the 40s I flew with the os50sx and a 12.25X3.75 apc prop, never had any problems with the planes except that they were a little loud. I beleive both planes died due to flat-spinning them into the ground. The 120 size I flew into some power lines at the end of the runway. The plane seems to disappear on approach because of the thin wings. These planes need high-visibility covering on the leading edge of the wing. Good luck. they are fun planes to fly.

I'm interested in the DP Ultimate, but it's not listed on their website. Is this ARF still being produced? If I do get one, would an OS 70FS be too heavy for it?

Thanks,

Mike

Its been discontinued by DP, Mike. CerMark was listing it for a while on their site; you might have a look.

BTW, one of my pals had this with a YS 63. A beautiful model, both in looks and the way it flew. But it is not a "3D" plane, as I understand the concept. A 91 four stroke might have enough power to make it hover, and all of that, but the weight penalty would hamper the fine normal flight characteristics.

And my buddy sold it because of the small size. As noted above, it gets small in a hurry.

The DP Ultimate 40 is an awsome little plane.... I didn't know you could stil get it?!!! But if you can find one (and it's not ridiculously priced) I'd get it in a heart beat. Mine is powered with a YS 63, loads of power.... acctually this is the first plane that I could get to hover at 1/2 throtle with the reccomended engine where I fly at 5000 ft ASL!!!! As for 3D capabiulity It's got it....But I'm not too good 3d'n little planes (things happen faster than my thumbs can keep up with)...45 degrees throw is easy to get out of the rudder and elevator. Plane knife edges solidly with very little coupling with the elev and ail. It's by far my most favorite plane I've had in it's size range.

As for my setup.

YS 63 for power (plenty of power even at 5000' with air densities as high as 9000 I bet)

HS 5245's on Elev, rudder and ailerons, and a HS 81 on the throtle

Pull Pull on elev and rudder, with the elevator servo mounted under the cockpit (only Mod made)

balances with the battery (1200 mah 4.8V Nimh) about 4" aft of the CG

Do a search in the ARF section for it.... You'll find lots of good info, and several good pictures on it along with the moveing of the elevator servo to a better location for pull pull geometry. There is also a review here on RCU that Mark did..... he also did the elevator servo relocation, and good info! The only thing I would have done differently is to mount the engine inverted for better lateral balance and engine cooling.

Ohh look...I found some pictures of mine!!! (I've since moved the battery back to where the RX is)

I just ordered one of these and found this thread while looking for servo suggestions. The comments about it getting small in a hurry made me grin. Compared to my current Ultimate (25" span - picture attached), this thing is huge.

Here's a link to Marc's review of the DP Ultimate 40.
