Default H9 Big Ultimate ??

Here's a copy of an e-mail I received last week: (I'd asked about it's hovering and knife-edge capabilities)

We (Hangar 9) are considering the release of a 46% Ultimate (100" span). I flew a prototype at the IMAC NATS a few weeks ago. That model is my design and was built at the ARF factory. Production would come out looking essentially the same. Cost is still uncertain, but it would be no more than $1999. in ARF form.
Its hovering/Torque roll and vertical capabilities are EXCELLENT. It actually hovers easier than almost anything I've flown to date. Really surprised me. (Pics attached) (See P.S. below)
Knife edge and essentially anything requiring rudder power is the forte of an Ultimate. Knife edge loop is pretty simple. It does however take a lot of servo power on the rudder.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Sincerely,
Mike McConville
Horizon Hobby Inc.

P.S. Don't know how to transfer the pictures into this message. Tell how and it'll be done.

Default That's too big.

While that sounds cool.....I love bipes....I'm a bit dissapointed that it's going to be that big. A 100" bipe is going to require a 150cc engine and all the other more expensive stuff that goes along with a 46% bird.

Personally, I'd like to see them keep things in line with their other giant scale offerings. If they would make it such that it could be powered with an 80cc motor I'd get in line for one in a heartbeat.

Mike Mc/H9,

If you are out there reading this thread please consider offering the bipe in a smaller size too. I'd love to have a bipe I could power with a ZDZ 80 single.

That's definitely a way cool looking plane!!!! I love that color scheme.

H9 please, please say you'll do this as smaller ARF too. One that we can stick an 80cc engine into.

Bet you that a *good* 1/4-scale version would sell like crazy.

Just think of all the modelers (myself included) that are on the waiting list for a DP Ultimate...

Try looking at the H-9 Challenger Pitts ARC. It's got size, and flys well. In my personal opinion, the Ultimate/Pitts is a better aerobatic plane than the Ultimate. The straight bottom wing permits slower landing speeds and a double stall break, something really fun to take advantage of in bipes.

If your looking for a smaller (than 100") ARF, the Dave patrick .120 Ultimate is a real kick! 60" wing.

That is a way cool plane. Did you see the specs there in the artical addressed above?......It only has $1700 worth of servos stuffed into it. Lets see, 1700 for servos, 1500 for a motor, $2000 for the airframe...... Add another grand for misc hardware, spinner, dual recievers and stuff. That's a $6200 bipe!

Yeah, it's very cool and double the price of a finnished off H9 33% Cap or Suk. I stand by what I said before. A smaller version would be fantastic. At the 46% size I can only admire, but scale it down to the point where I can equip it like my 33% H9 Cap and I'm there in line to buy one.

Maybe H9 could do both sizes??? That plane is pretty enough to sell like hot cakes.

Default H9 ultimate

I saw this plane fly at the NATS this year and yes, it is very impressive.

however, I would love to see it offered along the same lines as the 1/3 cap, extra, sukhoi. If so I would be first in line. while Im sure H9 could sell some limited numbers of this plane in the 46% size it would definitely outprice myself and possibly others that have become loyal to the H9 lineup.

we should get a petition e-mail from those of use that are interested and see if we cant influence them to produce a 1/3 scale (?) size!

whataya say guys?

Great looking bipe !!! I think the manufacturers are overlooking the 50cc market for the people that would like to get away from glow but not spend a fortune. Most of the 50cc size planes are to small and to heavy. Look at the Aero Works Edge 84" wing about 1300 sq. in.s and 15 to 16lb.s it flies great. If someone made and arf close to that I know it would realy sell. The Ultimate in the 50cc size would be nice.

I don't have any idea how to do an E-mail petition. Actually, I don't care to deal with learning how either. But, if someone else is up to the task I'd certainly add my name.

I've already E-mailed my thoughts on this issue to Horizon, but if we had several other people speak up and say the same thing maybe they'd accomodate us..... It's worth a try!

I'd sign a petition for either 50cc or an 80cc version. But as I'm sitting here considering this I think the 50cc version would be my preference. This big Cap is kind of a hassle to live with around the shop. And I agree, most of the other ARFs out there are too small for a 50cc gasser.

Default It even has TV Time!!!

Did you guys see this plane on the Pre-Race Show for the NASCAR Race yesterday??? They did a special on Bill Elliott and his RC Heli flying. Then they showed the Ultimate coming in and popping up into a hover. I assume Mike McConville was flying it, but you never know. Bill is a pretty good pilot. He has a full scale paved runway at his place in Dawsonville and a few full scale planes in the hangar.

I would also love to see this bird make it as a 33% or 35% as well. 35% would give ya around 76" WS & 83.70" Fuse length, or the 33% would be 71.15" WS & 78.90" Fuse length, this range should be perfect for the 80-100cc range I would think.

Anyone have any idea how difficult it would be to increase or or decrease a plan to get the size one would be interested in?
I am assuming there would be alot more to this than just blowing up the plans. I would think that you would have to re-engineer the structure to handle the weight and stress.

Any ideas or thoughts????

I'm no kit designer, but I would think that most of the design work (assumming it was done on CAD) would remain the same. I'm sure going down from a 46% bird to a 33% or even a 27% one would require some re-engineering here and there.

Even if there is a little re-engineering, as long as the color scheme is retained they would sell a ton of them. What a beauty!
Besides, isn't that what they do?.....design and build planes....

Wiz I agree with you that is what they do. My line of thought was that they would not build a smaller version, so how would an individual go about doing it on his own?
I would probably snatch up something for a 80cc engine size range.
Heck I already have a Mike McConville designed bipe in the Midwest Super Stinker pitts bipe. Would love a larger all out ultimate bipe, I think, LoL.

I gotcha..... Seems to be Bob Godfrey has a smaller Ultimate kit. Maybe that would fill the bill if H9 doesn’t oblige us.
