Hey guys, what's the dope on Hitec servo's? Just had a look at the Servo City website and then checked the UK model shop websites and can save plenty over Futaba equivelants.

Servo's I could use are:

HS945 MG coreless

HS5945 MG digital/coreless

HS6985 HB digital/coreless

Are they any good, or am I wasting my time lookin at them?

Do a search.. seems like the 5945's have the most noted failure rate..

I've heard that they can be unreliable, but loads of people use them in 30%+ models. I ave 645MG's in my flip and they are fine. I know someone who has the 645's in a Kangaroo jet.

I haven't yet had a failure in the air, but I got one a while back that never worked.

I was in your same position..Any servo can fail but Ive been reading more about Hitec failures recently so I went with jr 8611's for my 28% Edge..I havent flown it yet so I cant say if I made the right choice but I just felt more comfortable with the Jr's

I've bought a load and all ok so far.

As for the failures, from what I have heard there were some programming issues with the first generation of digitals, about two years ago, but all ok now.

As with everything in life, you get what you pay for. Probably not quite as good as JR or Futaba, but I have not seen any noticable difference.

They are superb value for money, i use the hs625 and hs645 in 80" edge 540's and extras and never had a problem. The more specialised servos hitec do are great but the more basic standard servos are dodgy from experience. (hs 311)

Wowbagger, Hitec aren't renowned as the greatest servos, however their value factor is fantastic.

My recommendation if youre going to use hitec, go way overkill. I had some 645 Mgs in my old 32% ultimate, torque wise they shouldve been plenty, never really had a problem with them until i had one lock up at full deflection, killing the model ... cause of this was something do with the gears, i think one of the spindles or spindle housings failed but cant be certain... the gears were a mess anyway!

I've heard good and bad on the digis, theyre supposed to be better than the 645s i was using, however, if i hear that something i try to stay clear.

I speak very highly of JR digitals, had 8411s in my 2m funtana for 2 years now and theyre still going strong, although they could do with servicing now, the gears are all but worn out!

If you've spent a lot of money on the model, spend that bit extra on servos, in my experience i think it might've paid off to get JRs.

Thanks for the replies guys. I heard some bad stuff too here and there, so I'll probably go with the Futaba 9206's I originaly planned to get.

Well, the plane may be getting a little heavier than planned but at least I'll have a lightweight wallet...

Good, I also have 9206s and for longevity i rate them over the JRs, they havent developed any slop at all, they seem a tad slower though, however i am only using them on 4.8v, theyre supposed to be better on 6.

What model is it?

Go the JR or Futaba I had two hitech 5945's fail in my comp arf 2.3 luckily on the ground,ripped them all out and went JR 8611's.

Welsh 3D, it's a DP 26% Edge with BME 50 gasser. According to the Futaba website the 9206 is 4.8v only. They say not to use 6 volts. But I have heard of people using 6 volts. Personally I wouldn't risk it. They've got stump pullin' torque and are fast enough, also I can get away with four, 1 per aileron, 1 elevator, 1 rudder and save a cell in the battery pack.

Know anywhere that can beat £68 each?

Yeah get JRs from Inwoods if youre willing to spend that money, theyre extremely cheap at the moment.

I've had a go of Gareth Williams (the rcme review one) edge and it is absolutely fab to fly, if youve flown a hngar 9 edge this is streets ahead in construction and flying. he has a mix of hitec 625 and 645 in his, but personally I wouldnt use them. The Moki 2.10 doesnt have as much power as we anticipated though... BME will be brilliant.

If you wanted to use 6v, JR also do a 6v version of the 8411, it is in stock at inwoods and the same price, cant remember the model number of it but if you phone and ask for dave he will be happy to help you.

I've had some older Hitec analogs that have locked full over causing the plane to be stuck at full throttle. Also some that suddenly get really slow and then don't work at all. I have a few Hitec digitals and they work fine. I'm a JR person and I'd say get the 8611's. If you want Hitec, the new Kabonite servos are pretty good.

Thanks guys, I'll take a look at the JR's. Yeah, it IS a lot of money, another good reason for keeping the servo count down to four! But I trust Futaba. I have a whole raft of 148's and 3001's that have never given me any trouble, some are from when they were first introduced and are still going strong. And I do a lot of flying. The only one I ever killed was on a Funtana 40S aileron, and even then it only went slow in one direction.

Nah, I'll stick with Futaba...

i dont know the numbers (im a JR person) but futaba have bought a loada servos out to compete in the 8411 8511 and 8611 market

pricewise, JR are much better value and definately as good if not better, the 8411 is definately a more powerful and much faster servo than the 9206, i can tell you that first hand, the statistics are always a bit prospective in my opinion. Your choice though, neither of those servos is unreliable.
