Default Gyros

How many of you guys out there that are into 3-d use gyros?I've been flying for 10 years and been into standard type acro for awhile.I'm really starting to get into this 3-d stuff but have a hard time maintaining a hover for extended periods,or at least making it look good.I keep seeing pics of guys touching the tails of their planes while they hover in front of them with one hand,I assume this has to be gyros ,correct?

Default Gyros and 3D

Negative, none of the pros use gyros. One of the 14 year-old kids at our field can torque-roll and hover the 33% Edge 540T I sold him from one end of the runway down and back while dragging the rudder the whole time... He bought the plane from me less than 6 months ago...

Another local torque rolling junkie kid with incredible talent is fairly well known to many nationally is Garret Morrison.

No gyros, gyros are illegal in all forms of competition.

Takes lots of practice and the correct setup...

Hi KingAirJockey!

How many of you guys out there that are into 3-d use gyros?

Mike McConville (TOC pilot) says he used them like training wheels to get started with hovering maneuvers. I don't know... I didn't. A friend at the field is trying to get started torque rolling and outfitted his plane with them. I tried it and it does seem to give me more time for corrections. But, it also feels funny... kinda slow and the timing is different. I feel the same way about the simulator. I don't want to torque the gyros or the simulator... just the plane, thanks. :-)

I can give you a few tips if you want? Okay then ...

1) Assuming you have a plane setup for 3D... first get comfortable flying it around in 3D rates. Especially the elevator. Then you can start working on the maneuvers.
2) Harriers and Elevators are easy and get your confidence up.
3) Hovering by using the right aileron to keep from torqueing is easier than torque rolling. And, it's safer since it's easy to blast out forward and out of trouble.
4) Getting good at torque rolling just takes alot of time. You have to get used to the corrections you need from four different angles. One... when you're looking at the top of the plane. Two... when you're looking at the belly of the plane. Three and four... when you're looking at each side of the plane. Once you have that wired you just have to stay ahead of the plane with just the right amount of correction and prop blast... simple.

There's alot more to know and experience, of course. Your plane's setup, your engine and your prop, the way you work the throttle to get prop blast at the right times, usually small rythmic corrections of up elevator and right rudder between the bigger corrections needed from wind, etc., and so forth. And, of course, the lower you are... the easier it is to see the plane to correct sooner and better... but also the easier it is to stuff it.

I have a video that I might put on my website... it's me about 50' up torque'n. My clunk line falls off and there is two seconds between the time the engine stops (while I'm pointed straight up) and the time I'm on the ground. Not much time to decide how to handle the situation. So, anyway, it's a catch 22. I say... go with as cheap of a good 3D plane as you can... get used to the 3D elevator in normal flight... and just go for it.
