Default What does you Funtana 90 weigh?

I bought a GMS 1.20 for my (still in the box) F90 but had a change of plans when my digital scale said the engine weighs about 4oz more than the specs posted on Tower's web site [:@]

Thinking of going with a Magnum .91 2C which pulls my 8.5lb UCD very nice.

So what will my Funtana 90 weigh?? Near 8 lbs with light gear???

I'd say more like 9 lbs, but it's got a huge wing, so that's still light. You will be able to put your battery in the rear of the plane to get the same balance as I have with the battery on the motor box. Don't be scared about the weight of the engine, you'll want the power, BELIEVE ME.

Turns out my UCD was 7lbs 14oz so anything over 8 lbs will be marginal.

So can I get my F90 down to 8lbs?? Electron 6, 2.5oz battery, 1.3 oz servos, no wheel pants.....maybe??

Or bite the bullet and put in the 35 oz GMS 1.20?

I built mine just like the manual says. I used a Saito 150 and I tried to make it as light as possible. Mine weighed 9 lbs 14 oz. This is one of my great disappointments in this plane. I expected it to be in the 8 to 8.5 lb range as it is advertised. To me it has ruined the experience.
Thanks.

Just for comparison, my UCD60 with Saito 100 weighs 7 lbs 4.5oz, my Sig Mayhem with YS110 weighs 7 lbs 14 oz. I built them by the manual also. They both were in the range the manual says. Not so for the Funtana.
Thanks,
Barry

If you are at 9lbs 14oz I don't see how I'll ever get to 8 lbs, even with a lighter engine.

Thanks, this is saving me a lot of time.

Default RE: What does you Funtana 90 weigh?

Mine was 8.75 lbs with a Saito 100, stock gear, wheel pants, 3 9411 tail servos, 2 8411 wing servos, a HS 225 throttle servo, and a JR Extra 5 cell 1100mAH pack hanging off the front/side of the motor box for balance. My tail servos are the lightest possible at 1.4 oz each, so I think it will be difficult to get the tail any lighter.

With a Saito 180, carbon gear, a TP 2100 Lipo battery and MAXX 6V regulator, and no wheel pants, it now weighs 9.5 lbs. The extra power more than makes up for the 12 oz. I also changed the rudder servo to an 8411.

Default RE: What does you Funtana 90 weigh?

8.75 lbs with the super light saito 100 would mean that 8 lbs is truely impossible.

Thanks, looks like the 1.20 will be the engine. I just wish I got another os 1.60 since it's only a few ounces heavier than the GMS 1.20

Thanks again, now I know what route to take.

Default RE: What does you Funtana 90 weigh?

Does the OS 1.60 seem reasonable...it's almost twice the "Funtana 90" .90 class/size.

However, people are putting Saito 180's in...what's their weight and practical thrust/power compared to the 1.60FX?

Reason I'm curious is that I just finished and test-ran my F90...came in at 9 3/8 pounds dry with a ST G-90 ring engine...ouch! Pretty heavy. I could probably shave off thet 3/8 pound with Lithium batteries, CF, etc. I also have an OS 1.60 FX on my bench...homeless[X(]

There's a thread here somewhere on F-90 with OS 1.60FX. Those boys seem pretty happy with theirs. Does the 1.60 FX in this bird make any sense???

Well at 9 3/8 lbs your .91 will not be enough for hovering, assuming that's what you want to do.

I guess ideally a YS 1.10 would be the engine of choice since it weighs 28 oz with muffler (according to Tower's specs).

The GMS I bought weighed more than Tower advertised, the scale read 30oz engine alone and 35 oz with a Bisson pitts muffler. I'm trying the GMS since it's cheap and someone has to try it

Next 2C in line would be the OS 1.60 wich only weighs about 40 oz with a Bisson pitts muffler, only 5 oz more than the 1.20. So I guess the 1.60 is definately an option. If I had one laying around I would have used it.

OK...I'm down to one battery, and mounted it on a cantalever next to my motor. The battery weighs about 4oz, so moving it this far forward puts my CG spot-on without adding any dead weight.

Here's a pic that inspired the idea...

Default RE: What does you Funtana 90 weigh?

I'm just a hair under 9 pounds using the above battery placement idea. My motor is horizontal, so my battery is next to the motor, counterbalancing the weight of the cylinder sticking out to one side.

I can't imagine a way to follow the instructions, use the supplied hardware, and get an AUW of 8 to 8 1/2 pounds as specified by Hanger 9.

Looking forward to the maiden flight!

3de, how do you like your Saito 180 in this plane? I happen to have one and I've been thinking of getting a 90 size Funtana. Do you think it is a good combination? I have a friend with a Saito 150 in his and it seems to fly nice. Anyone else out there with feedback?

Windjunkie how does your plane perform with the SA180? Do you get any feeling like it might be a tad heavy? I need your input, I am ready to make a choice and I can go with a SA180, Mokie 1.8, or OS160. What would be your preference?

Have you seen this video of Kyle with his funtana 90, ys 120? The bandwidth is exceeded right now but it's definately worth checking out. One of the most impressive flying/3d videos that I've ever seen. On rolling harriers, in the knife edge position, a couple of times he actually touches the rear stab on the ground!!!!!! Here's the vid

I love this combo. I fly at 5200' ASL so I really need to "overpower" everything I fly if its intended for 3D flight. It really is a fun combo. After reading how so many people had to add a lot of weight to the nose, making rudder pull/pull ect, I opted for the 1.80 no added weight anywhere and it ballanced perfectly at 7-1/8"

Still haven't gotten the plane out of the box but I did weigh some parts and found lots of places to shed weight.

Stock wheels 2.8oz [:'(]
Stock axles 1.5oz [:'(]
Wheel pants 2+ounces

I don't plan on using any of the above

I really didn't notice the weight difference in going from 8.75 lbs to 9.5 lbs. (I was smiling too much). The F90 lands like a trainer, and still has very manageable stall traits at both these weights. Heck, guys are going over 11 lbs electrifying them and they still claim great performance. It's a light airframe to begin with and a far cry from the funtana 40 size, which turns into a tippy monster with more weight.

If you really can go with ANY of those engines, why not go for the gusto and get the 180? --great torque, pleasing sound. I think most guys who opt for the OS 1.6 do so for the cost difference. A friend put an OS 1.6 in his, and it seemed to be about the same power as the 180 four stroker (he didn't try a lot of props, but it was in the ballpark of my Saito 180 with a Zinger Pro 18x6).

I can't comment on the Moki, as I've never owned or seen a 1.8.

If you do go with more power, be sure to use quality servos and hardware where it counts. I'd also watch the CA hinges closely as all my tail hinges eventually broke and I replaced them with nylon/steel pin types. That wasnt too fun, but this was all a fun learning experience for me overall.

Default RE: What does you Funtana 90 weigh?

I have a YS 140 L in it and it is comporable to an OS 160, Saito 180 in both weight and power. Maybe a bit more power than the Saito. Lands like a trainer and 3d is amazing.

I have made plenty of 3/4 throttle fly by's and no problems. I have it on hard mounts and no vibration issues after 100 flights. I am on my second Funtana and at 50 flights same as the first. No issues. Go for the bigger motors and don't listen to what people say about overpowering. Use the throttle smartly and the Funtana shall fly great with a bigger motor.

Mine came out to 9 lbs and 9 ozs.

I started building my F90 today and I'm impressed with the quality of the plane. This is a big, well built plane for $210. The plane is really more of a 1.20 sized plane.

The plane is built stronger and heavier than I expected so I would not hesitate to put an OS 1.60 in it if you know how to use the left stick

So far I think the GMS 1.20 was a good choice but will definately not overpower it. Lets hope the engine runs

Tavis,
You're joking right?[] Tell me you've flown several "Reall" R/c planes... If not SHip that funtana to me and get a TRAINER! Also if you absoluely will not fly anything but this funtana you;d best take all that "Crap" off there and get here as light as you can so she goes down in 'style' rather than in a tip-stall

ANy who how come no one has mentioned the Super Tigre G 2300? It's 1.4 Ci and alot of people run them in Ultra Stick Lites around here and they pull them around smartly and rocket out of a hover.. I Think the guys I Talked to said theirs came In a 10.5 lbs dry...

I Just Got Mine setup and it weighs 9 lbs. dry! Just figured I'd toss another option at you!
