Funtana 40 Motor help
Im sure this has been asked a thousand times. But i need some opinions on what motor i should run, Im sticking with 2 strokes due to how exspensive four strokes are.
I was thinking an O.S FX.61 or an O.S LA 65, Good choices ?? Or would the 91FX be better?
Thanks for the input

RE: Funtana 40 Motor help
Has anyone tried a YS63? I am contemplating between weight vs. power. As far as power goes I am considering the Saito 100. Lighter and more powerful than the 91 Saito.
Any thoughts?

I ran a Saito 82 on mine. It has the same power a 91 has got and weighs about 8 to 10 oz less. It had plenty of pull out on 15% nitro and was a rocket on 30%!

RE: Funtana 40 Motor help
Thanks for all the input, iv'e narrowed it down to 2 motors Both the saito 91 and 82.
I was told that the 82 whieghs about the same as a . 46 2 stroke, I havnt yet checked to see if thats accurate or not but if its that light im definetly running it.
I know the 91 barely whighs more though, god i hate being indecisive Oh well ill figure it out.

The 91 is more powerfull but heavier. I run a .82. The .82 will also bolt up to the mounts with no modification. You will have to move the blind nuts in the firewall to fit the .91. I can't image one out flying mine with a .91. The verticle might be a little better but thats it.

RE: Funtana 40 Motor help
The YS 63fzs is about the same power as most 91 size four strokes. I think it is also about equal to the new Saito 82. It also weighs alittle bit less than most 91 4 strokes. The nice thing about the YS 63 is pump will allow you put the tank on the CG if you want and it also runs very well inverted. The pump gets rid of tank height issues. They are a bit pricey but they're amazing engines.

RE: Funtana 40 Motor help
This is how I feel about it. I have had all the four strokes and I have no complaints about any of them. I just got a YS 63 and put it on a Katana 40 profile and since then the only engines I'm interested in are YS. I was looking hard for a 110 but they are hard to find. I did find two good 120's though and they are going on my other planes now. I think they are a bit finicky but to me the extra performance and cost are worth it.

Hey Dealspeed, I put a YS .63 on my Katana Profile .40 and the power to weight ration is perfect.
There is video of it on my website.
Let me know if you need more help.

RE: Funtana 40 Motor help
I am currently building my 3rd Funtana 40. The first had a Saito 72 in it with a 14-4W prop. It had enough power - but I wanted more vertical. The 2nd has a Saito 91 in it with a 15-4W prop. This power setup can do it all. I used a Saito motor mount, which required re drilling and installing new blind nuts. If you balance the plane to the specifications - it will require 2 to 2 1/2 ounces of weight in the tail.
One of my friends put a OS 50SX in his, only to replace it with a Saito 82 with a 14-4W. Which provided him with the power and flight characteristics he wanted. I strongly believe this plane was designed solely for a 4 stroke engine.
If you have any trouble building this plane - reply to this message. As I said, I am on my third plane and fixed a number of manufacturing / alignment problems.

A choice between the YS and Saito, I will go with the YS, the engine will idle much better and has wonderful transition, I have both brands and now am no longer keen to purchase a Saito. Only problem is that the YS is expensive.

RE: Funtana 40 Motor help
I've got a Magnum 91 fs on a Mojo 60. Couldn't ask for a better cheap 4 stroke engine. They are a tad heavier than the saito but good power. If you can find a good used one for cheap grab it. check the marketplace here or on ebay. I wouldn't pay over $150 for one though as they are that much new on sales.
Good luck........

RE: Funtana 40 Motor help
My Funtana .40 has plenty of power w/ a .82a. Keep this plane lite for best performance!I even have a mini servo running my throttle. The heavier motor the less it will do elevators, harriers, ect....Sure it will pull out better, but if you keep it lite you won't have to worry about it
