I am using an Irvine 53 with 12.25x3.75 prop on my Laser 3D.
I am having problems with the motor and am thinking of changing it. It has been suggested to me that a 46 would be better than the 53. Throttle response on the 53 makes prop hanging almost impossible (for me anyway).
Any thoughts.

I have an Irvine 53. It was in a Pizazz that I no longer have.
I ran the APC 12.25x3.75 and 13x4. My throttle response was like an electric motor. Instant! Work on your low speed adjustment. It's a hotter motor than a 46!
I ran Omega 10% with an OS #8 plug.

I flew my first Laser 3D (RIP) with a TSI .46 APC 12 1/4x3 3/4prop, flew great, enough power to pull out of a hover with confidence.
I am currently putting the finishing touches on my new Laser 3D, should be flying by the end of the week. But this one I modified the nose a bit to accept an o.s. .91 four stroke w APC 14x6 !
The plane was built and covered by my buddy Rickc2009 and I went with the .91 four stroke at his suggestion (urging?) but the motor just looks plain HUGE on the nose of this bird! Believe it or not it balances just fine with three servos in the tail, might need a touch of tailweight to get the CG where I had it on my first Laser, but it's darn close!
Had to bend up a new set of gear for the prop to clear, beefed up the firewall to accept the additional power/torque of the four stroke and moved the rudder servo to the tail for balance. Other than that it's plain old stock.
Has anyone else flown this plane with this (or similer) motor?
I'll be breaking in the motor tonight, should have the plane in the air by the end of the week, i'll post again after I fly it and let you know how it works out.

I have had my Lazer 3D For 2- 3 years with silly amounts of flights on a Irvine 53 with 12,25x 3,75 props. Cant fault this combo. Gives great response. Taught me how to prop hang and torgue roll. I think that the Irvine is just about dead now but I would replace this combo at the drop of a hat. I had a madness with a YS 63 and another with a Irvine 53 Nothing in it for response just a lot more power and torque with the 63. Also a lot more expensive to run and harder on the airframe (Vibration)

Well, I flew the Laser this morning with the O.S. .91 II 4-stroke.
As expected, it had GOBS and GOBS of power and the motor isn't even broken in yet!
The C.G. is a little bit too far foreword. I'll need to move the battery further back and maybe add a touch of tail weight. Not really nose heavy, just not where I like it.
It flew every bit as well as my first Laser 3D (with a TSI .46 2 stroke for power) and in some ways better. I flew it 5 times this morning , a couple of trim flights and a couple of "let's see how much stress this airframe can handle flights" I loved every second of it.
The Laser is by far my favorite airplane to date, I know there are several similer designs out there so don't flame me for saying that. I'm sure all of you Dioblotin-no limit-diablo-seduction-u can 3D-extreme 3D etc..etc.. owners are very happy with your planes as well, i'm just happy with this one.
The plane weighs in at just over 5 1/4lbs dry with the .91 in the nose. I'm running an APC 14 x 6 prop at the moment, this thing hovers at less than 1/4 throttle with the engine still burbling rich
and accelerates out of hover like a rocket. About what I expected with the bigger motor, what I didn't expect is that the plane still flies very light even with the extra weight in the nose.
Spins are lots of fun, although not super tight. Waterfall and snaps aren't as "snappy" as I would like, but thats probably due to the slightly off C.G.. Moving the C.G. back a bit should improve
it.
Blender with this plane (and my earlier Laser 3D) is a blast. You can easily flatten out the spin and it just stops dead in midair, Add a little power and you've got a really sweet climbing inverted flatspin. Climb a bit nose it over and start the manouver all over again, like I said , sweet.
Gonna make a few small adjustments tonight and try it again ASAP. I'll post again after I fly it again.

How was the Knife edge?
Really glad to here it flew well!
Try something for me if you can. In level flight give it a rudder turn only turn and tell me if you need to make any other corrections. Any adverse yaw?

I'm running the wood mount right now with a YS 63. I put a layer of 2 oz glass cloth between the two ply beam mounts, and I used short pieces of glass cloth that are about 1/2" wide to help secure the whole mount to the firewall.
I've got 6 or 7 flights on it now with no signs of stress.
Question: Have you guys flown yours at high throttle much?
FYI - I cut the wingtips off as many have suggested. I'll see how that works tonight!

Mine is 5 pounds exactly before I cut the tips off. I've got two Hs-225BB's and an HS-77 in the tail. It balances at the "expert" position (165 mm back) with the 700 mah battery right behind the tank.

Good call on the motor! You were 100% right!
Knife edge requires a small amount of aileron to stay straight up and down no elevator at all unless you want to turn . I don't remember if my old one was the same way. Not really a problem though, just have to be aware of it.
BTW, no adverse yaw in rudder-only turns, just stays flat and goes in a circle.
Tonight i'm gonna wind up the throws to the mechanical limits of the servo's/linkage. I have the high rates pretty high now , but I can get some more. Remember the amount of elevator throw I had on Laser #1?

I did however use the wood mount with my TSI .46 on my first Laser, worked flawlessly for MANY flights. Never a problem at all. I did not reinforce the mount in any way as another poster above mentioned, just built it stock, C/A'd it together and coated the whole thing with epoxy. Bulletproof and ingenious design. I really liked it, if the .91 would'v fit I would'v used it.

It's a different plane. Knife edge is perfect with no mixing. I can harrier and elevevator now, and my waterfalls don't fall off to either side like they did before.
I'm kicking myself for not building it without them!

Just kidding, snaps and spins are just like all the other manouvers the Lazer 3D does, snaps are "bigger" (??? I don't know how else to describe them) and less violent on low rates and faster and "snappier" on high. Spins are a thing of beauty with this plane, not the tightest spins i've ever seen, but really slow and graceful inverted or upright. Just a real pleasure to enter and exit. The plane just "flies" out of any situation in any attitude. When you stop a spin, it stops and flies away with no loss of altitude. I've had planes (caps and such) that you had to leave an extra 50' of air between you and the ground to exit a spin. Not the Laser, lots and lots of fun to fly.

On my current Laser I am using 5 Hitec 425bb's and one Hitec HS300 (throttle) with a 6v 700mah battery. No problem.
On my first Laser I used 425bb's on ailerons, 605's on elevator, 545MG on rudder and s3003 on throttle also with 6v battery. Also no problems, the point is standard servos are just fine in this plane.

I've read about this several times on RCU for the Laser 3D and the Madness. They serve no purpose, are hard to cover on the Laser, and they actually hamper knife edge, harrier, waterfalls, and elevators. If those 3D flight characteristics are not important to you, then don't worry about it.
I would suggest some 1" triangles or other bracing to help support the last rib because the covering tends to bow it in when you shrink it.
