Default YS 140 L Prop Hanging ! Which Prop ?

What is the best prop size and brand for hovering my YA 120 size Sukhoi powered by a YS 140 L and Slimline Pitts muffler ?
Thanks

Default 18x6 may not work well on your plane

The YS140L will turn the APC 18x6 mentioned in the previous post just fine and I use that exact combination on a giant fun fly. The only prop I ever tried that worked better for hovering on a YS140L was a 18x6 wide blade carbon fiber.

However, I have a Sig 231Ex 25% CAP and put on a 18x6 APC thinking it would help me hover. The 18x6 didn't give me a very comfortable speed envelope which made general flying a bit of a chore. Additionally, the APC 18x6 has a lot of mass and spool up can be a bit slow. I switched to a carbon fiber 18x6 (lighter) and it helped spool up but I still had flight issues due to lack of speed. I then switched to a carbon fiber 17x10. Hovers were a little harder to maintain but overall flying improved.

I know you asked which is the best prop for hovering, and a light wide blade 18x6 (i.e., carbon fiber) is probably the best hovering prop for that engine; however, I just wanted to point out that some planes may not fly well during normal flight with the 6 pitch.

I would recommend the 18x6 or 18x5 depending on what RPM you are getting.

Default Fun Fly

I scratch built a Something Extra knock off, but scaled it up 40%. Yes, I still use the APC 18x6W with YS140L on that plane. I prefer the spool up with the 18x6 carbon prop, but the difference otherwise is small between the APC and a similar carbon fiber prop.

I have a new YS 140L on my H9 Cap 232. I had the maiden flights today using an APC 17X8 and 25% SW fuel. It was awesome. The plane weighs12.5 pounds dry and flew right off the board. If I try another prop it may be an 18X6 mejzlik or similar, but for now I see no reason to change.
