Default Lanier 1/4 Scale Extra - 3D?

I working on a Lanier 1/4 scale Extra and plan on using it for 3D flying. I think the rudder and elevator are marginally sized as designed for this purpose. I am planning on enlarging both the rudder and elevators by moving the hinge line forward and then not removing the area from the control surfaces which is normally replaced with the balsa hinging strips. The instructions direct you to cut out the area added by the balsa stock...

Anyone have any experience with this plane and 3D flying or my proposed modifications? Comments and suggestions are welcomed.

I'm also planning on using a US Engines 41 because I already have one. I know there are plenty of more powerful engines that probably weigh less but as I said, I have this one. Comments on the combination? A friend also gave me the kit partially built so the whole thing should make a pretty economical entry into 3D for me.

Thanks.
