Default Question about UCD3D and servos

Will Hitec HS-605BBS servos work well on the rudder and elevator of the UCD at 4.8V?

I've got some 425BB that I plan on using for the ailerons and throttle. Will they suffice?

Default Question about UCD3D and servos

So far, I have a 605 on rudder.
And standard BB on everthing else. I only have 4 flights on mine and everthing is holding up well.

My brother has stand BB on everthing and he has about 7 flights on his and everthing is holding up well.

I had futaba 3004's lying around so I threw those in (on 6v so about 54oz torque), even rudder and I can do knife edge loops all day. The HS-605 would work great and is what I should have put in.

I've got 605's all around except throttle where I use a 225, all at 6v - speed is incredible!

I've got JR 8411SA's on ailerons, elevators, and rudder, and an Expert lo profile BB servo on throttle. 5 cell battery with regulator.

8411's?! At 2.3 oz each you're wasting a lot of weight. Spend less money and use precision micro servos at 0.8 oz each on those surfaces. You'll save almost half a pound and have a better flying A/C.

8411SA'a are lighter than 8411's, the plastic gear train isn't as heavy as the 8411'd metal gears.

I know I could still shave some weight in the UCD with lighter servos, but these 8411's are destined for a big Edge and if there's a problem with any of them I'd rather see it happen in the UCD.

Default Question about UCD3D and servos

Would 422's have enough torque for the ailerons and elevator in the UCD? I've got 425's also, but was interested in putting them in another plane.

The 422's aren't enough servo power for this plane. You will need 70 oz/in at least. 422's are around 42 oz in. The surfaces are much larger and deflect a lot more than standard planes. I'm running JR 4721 on the rudder (119 oz in) and hitec 545 (5 poles) on the ailerons and elevators.

Had a chance to get Rob Sarlan (NE IMAC director) to put this through the paces yesterday. If this didn't overstress it then anything I do won't much matter. He should be purchasing one soon. He did say it was really a surprise to fly. This was just after flying his new RadioCraft 42% Extra (what a beautiful plane).

I'm the same way... never met a plane that didn't fly better after a diet.

Even for ailerons and Throttle. I can see using powerfull servos for Rudder and elevator, but I wouldn't think that ailerons would require as much torque. I guess maybe more than what the 422's offer.

Default Question about UCD3D and servos

I will be running 225's on my elevator halves, with 4/40 linkage. A 605 or a 625 on the rudder, mounted under the fuse with pull/pull. Using standard futabas on the ailerons for now, and will upgrade them to 605 or 625s down the road. As for the throttle, and micro or mini would work fine. A hitec hs81 would be great.

Below are the specs on the hitecs at 4.8 and 6 volts. I plan on running a 6 volt nimh pack, not sure if it will be a 1600 or a small 720. Most likely the 1600, just to be safe.

HS-81 ($17.95)
Torque:
4.8VDC:
32 oz-in. (2.6 kg-cm)
6.0VDC:
38 oz-in. (3.0 kg-cm)
Speed @ 60 Degrees:
4.8VDC:
0.12 seconds
6.0VDC:
0.10 seconds
Bearing Type:
None (Case serves as bearing)
Case Size:
1.2"x 0.48"x 1.2" (30 x 11 x 30 mm)
Weight: .65oz (18.2 g)

225-bb ($22.95)
Torque:
4.8VDC:
54.6 oz-in. (3.9 kg-cm)
6.0VDC:
65.8 oz-in. (4.7 kg-cm)
Speed @ 60 Degrees:
4.8VDC:
0.14 seconds
6.0VDC:
0.11 seconds
Bearing Type:
Top Ball Bearing
Case Size:
1.27"x 0.66"x 1.21" (32.4 x 16.8 x 30.8 mm)
Weight: .95 oz (27 g)

Hitec 605 ($28.75) AND 625($39.95) (only difference appears to be metal gears, and the price LOL)
Torque:
4.8VDC:
77 oz-in. (5.52 kg-cm)
6.0VDC:
91 oz-in. (6.53 kg-cm)
Speed @ 60 Degrees:
4.8VDC:
0.16 seconds
6.0VDC:
0.13 seconds
Bearing Type:
Dual Ball Bearing
Case Size:
1.6"x 0.8"x 1.5" (40.6 x 20.3 x 38.1 mm)
Weight: 1.7 oz (48.2 g) 2.1 oz on the 625

Hope this proves helpful. All the info was from www.servocity.com (who also provides FREE shipping and handling with their orders, no matter the size). They also sell the high priced digitals if you want to spend the extra $$$.

Default Question about UCD3D and servos

I'm thinking of upgrading to a 9C and it comes with 4 Futaba 3004's. Will these be enough servo to hold me over until I can afford better ones? I'm definately going with a Hitec 605 or 625 on the rudder, but I'm hoping the 3004's will be able to work on the ailerons and elevators? I'll be running them on a 6V pack which appears to give around 50-60oz of torque. (By the way, how are the 3004 and 3001 servo's different?)

Tower has the 9C for $379 - $15(possibly more with other coupon codes). In addition you get a $20 gift certificate for buying a 9 channel radio. You also get a free CAMPac module to add 8 more models to the radios memory.

Comes out to about $344 and a free $30 CAMPac mod. Not too bad. Now if I can only find someone to take my Flash 5X off my hands

Default Question about UCD3D and servos

I currently have 3004's on the elevator halves of my UCD. My other Hitec 525's haven't come in yet. They seem to be working just fine. I'm flying them on 6v. Using 4-40 rods all around. Have a Hitec 605 on the rudder and 525's on the ailerons.

Default Question about UCD3D and servos

What traditionally needs more torque, the elevator servos or the ailerons? Or are they normally the same?

I know the throttle servo is usally a basic lightweight servo and the rudder servo is usually the most heavy duty of all the planes servos. Just wondered about the others.
