Default New Troybuilt Models PA Edge 540 50cc

Hey All!

I was wondering if any of you guys have any other details on this airplane. www.troybuiltmodels.com , due out in August is a Precision Areobatics 50cc gas Edge 540 w/ 84" wingspan, 75" in length, @ 13.2 lbs w/ a DA50 & Pitts muffler. Boy this sounds good to me!

There are a few threads on here about it. Do a search and see what you find. I can tell you that the quality of their smaller stuff is way above average and I'm sure you'll find it that way with the larger planes as well.

Well if it is coming from TBM I would not even worry about the quality.
I build a lot pf planes each year and as such do a lot of mail ordering.
Gene is one of the nicest guys I have ever dealt with and definitely stands
behind his products. Hell I just look forward to calling him

P.S Try his little foamie called the !QUOT!Monty!QUOT! ..........Sweet lil plane

Regards,

Tim Hudson

13.2 lbs at 84'" wingspan with DA 50???? Sounds pretty incredible....will they really come in at this weight? Is that with normal stuff or carbon fiber everything (gear, spinner, wing tube etc)?

It appears the 50 CC market is heating up. So many promising airplanes being talked about. Aeroworks is claiming to have some really light 50 cc planes. Aerotech has one coming out. Precision looks nice. You hate to buy anything now for fear that 2 days later another one will come out and be lighter. I can't wait to see some of these.

Has any body out there built a TBM PA Edge 540 yet? I am going to order one myself Soon. This Airplane would be perfect w/ a DA 50 w/ Smoke System (light weight & plenty of wing area)

12 lbs is not out of reach with a good solid airframe -and a 50 cc engine .
We did 11 lbs with 1280 squares solid foam wings etc- balsa /spruce fuselage-and a 40 ZDZ and pipe.
At 13 lbs a good 50 powered 1400 sq in model- should still be plenty sturdy.
Many arfs , same size weigh -17 lbs
There is a reason for this - many customers for these simply are not good flyers and wipe out gear plates in controlled crashes they call normal landings .
The EDGE that Gene did looks very good -- I bought a EF YAK - which is 15.25 lbs with full pipe and a 50 .
This is the best mass produced ARF -performance wise -I have seen to date
Why?
it fills the criteria
wing loading and power loading - the rest is all bullship.
That last 1-2 lbs makes a huge difference.

I can't believe there isnt more discussion on this plane based on the size and weight. To have a plane this size with a 50 cc gasser and weigh just over 13 lbs would be incredible. I guess we all think it sounds too good to be true. Only downside for me is that I am saving for my next 35% plane the 23lb Von Extra 260. Don't know if I can get the 50 cc plane too.

Hopefully mine will come in at the end of the month. I plan to go w/ smoke system, so I will figure at the most it will weigh in the 14 lb range w/ 1400 sq in should make it an awesome performer. I have a H9 Extra 260 w/ DA 50, and now I am going gas all the way. I am getting rid of all of my glow planes (except for my EF Yak 54 w/ YS 110 for now) and going to go bigger eventually. I just have to get a bigger shop & vehicle to tow a 35% size airplane.

Ive seen a few over here in Aus, evidently they fly great but the balsa is soft. Like in the leading edge. But apart from that they fly great for IMAC as well as 3ding

Thanks Funflyaddict for the info. I've been trying to download as many pics as possible on this airplane. It looks sharp except for the bottom of the engine cowling. some pics show it not fitting properly or it does not mate up to the fuselage. I would like to think that for $500+ it should be close to perfect. I wonder if PA have addressed the soft balsawood issue? or if the shipment coming TBM is the 2nd or 3rd run on these models have better quality balsawood.

A bot off topic but, I agree with the statement on the "Monte" foamie.
I have two built, and two in reserve.
Awsome!

I HAD one of these...was not happy with it BUT lots of folks are. There is a pretty looooong thread that had lots of good reviews...I was as a stick in the mud with one other having problems too. It depends what you are looking for in a plane. For me, I had a bad experience and got rid of the plane after 15 flights...went to a Aeroworks 50cc Yak...heavier BUT cleaner and a better sweet spot for 3D (for me).

One concern...when I bought the plane TroyBuilt was not carrying parts (landing gear or cowl) and Australia is a looooong way to ship a few parts.
