Best engine for 3D on Funtana .40
I fly a FuntanaS .40 w/ an OS 70 FS. I've tried the 13X4 W, 13X6, 12X6 props. It does great aerobatics, and has plenty of power for general aerobatic/pattern flying, but it doesn't seem to have quite enough power to hover with authority. It will just hover at full throttle, with no extra for pull out. What engines have you found to be the best for 3D? I understand 4C usually are preferred, but I'd also be interested to hear about any experience with 2C such as Super Tigre 75/90 etc.
PS, the pic below is obviously NOT my plane, it's just a pic I took at the Joe Nall this year.

haha.. if you have to deciced betweent the super tiger 75 or 90.. i would go w/ the 90 because they both have the same weight and almost the same size.. and the 90 is $4 more than the 75 on tower.. i had the 90 on mine.. and it would do.. vertical to MARS!

RE: Best engine for 3D on Funtana .40
Both are correct- The Saito-82 or YS-63 are best... I run the G-90 in mine and the CG is perfect, and it flies great--- Tons of power on a 15x4 Pro Zinger It actually floats pretty well, wing rock in Harrier is common, inverted less so but I am no 3D expert-
I would take the G-90 for price, but the Saito-82/YS-63FZ/S for best overall 3D perf.
Take care!

I would try a little more nitro, if not try to shave some weight from the plane (batt, landing gear, spinner, receptor etc) and get a YS 63 I have a plane at 5,2 oz that goes ot of hover nice and the engine is still getting stronger
os 70 weights almost the same of Saito 91!! so, that`s why the 3Ders talk more about saitos or YS

I agree that the Saito 82 will pull this bird with authority out of a hover.
The 2 strokers don't quite rev up quickly enough to safely get out of a hover. Use, as you have done, as flat a pitch prop as you can get. Preferably a 4" pitch.

after a little 3d with a .46 profile, I can tell you, they rev up fast, but not fast enough for my liking, whereas, four strokes have all the get up and go that you could ever want

I've just about gone through a can of the 30% Nitro, and it runs great, but the info above is running that fuel. I think it does have more power, with 15% it wouldn't stay in a hover as well. If I went with a G90, what muffler could I use to shed some weight? Seems as though that muffler is quite heavy. Thanks for the posts.

I love my ys 63 my my 40 funtana. On %30, it's a powerhouse. I've never seen a 2 stroke that can match (or even come close to) the throttle response of a YS. That being said, a saito would do nicely on this plane also...

Click in the link below, this is a video of my funtana 40 with the saito 91 engine, slimline pitts muffler, apc 14x6 prop and 15% fuel...

RE: Best engine for 3D on Funtana .40
I agree w/ the Saito .82. I had two Funtana 40's w/this motor and flew it w/ 14-6 APC and 30% Nitro and it wasa blast to fly. With the 14-6 prop I flew IMAC style aerobatics and 3-D. I also had flew a Funtana 90, and found that the Funtana 40 was snappier, but the Funtana 90 is a great plane in its own right. In Fact I learned to fly 3-D w/this setup and now fly 50cc gasser 3-D machines down on the deck.
My 2 cents.

RE: Best engine for 3D on Funtana .40
Well, I guess I'll say my 2ΒΆ for what it's worth. You can go http://www.3dbatix.com/videos2.htm and watch the flying by Zak West with a Saito 100. If you going to go with the 91, you might as well go with the 100. That's what I did. More power, and if you can believe it, the 100 if .1 oz. lighter than the 91! plus you can get that for only $20 more than the 91!!
I don't know about others running with the 100 but my Funtana is just a tad tail heavy, and that's only because I don't have the cowl on right now. When I put that on, it's balanced perfectly. I have my battery just in front of the servo in that little opening and I have the throttle pushrod kinda hold it in place.
Anyways, I seriously would go with the 100. Once I say Zak fly with the 100 that made my decision. It's good to watch the video right next to the Funtana vid of the UCD and Funtana pull out from the hover.
It took all that just to say that I vote for the 100.
Hope that helps

RE: Best engine for 3D on Funtana .40
Zak was using APC 15x4W on his 100 in Funtana 40. It must have been turning at about 10500 rpm. Now, Saito 82 is capable of swinging the same prop at 10000 rpm on 30% nitro, which in my opinion, is very good for a plane this size. Also, I think because of the larger engine, this Funtana weighs 6 lb. 3 oz. There is a 4 oz. difference in weight between these 2 engines.
I am not saying Saito 82 is almost as powerful as Saito 100. However, due to ground clearance limit, you can't put a 16x4W on a Funtana 40 to really make a Saito 100 shine. Unless, of course, you get some after-market landing gear.
I had a Saito 91 in my Funtana 40 earlier. While with the 91 is great, I really like the way it flies better with the 82.

I too was looking at the Saito 72, 82, 91, and 100. I don't know why I decided on the 100. Probably because it was more powerful, and for just $20 more than the 91, I'd rather have the 100, and it weights .1oz less than the 91.
It is all just a matter of preference on what you want to use. I seriously would say the 82, 91, or 100. These would be the best ticket. They all have more than enough power to have more than enough fun. I have seen the Funtana hover and have fun with the Funtana, but not much pull-out power. Just do whatever you want. The 82 would be good with 30%
