Default 40% Edges Midair!!

I was at the River City Classic giant scale fly in today here in Memphis. Mike Sauls and Blaine Austin were doing a little formation. They both did a snap roll at the same time, then about 2 seconds after that: wwwwhhhhhaaaaammmmmmmppppp!!! Fortunatly both were able to get them down safely. Blaine had a prop stuck all the way through his right wing...and his rudder counterbalance was gone. Mike's firewall broke and the engine was hanging down. I would say they got very lucky. I took some pics...but my stone age camera uses film....so I will scan the pics and get them on here ASAP.

Default 40% Edges Midair!!

We saw Blaine lose 2 40% Cardens at the Chatanooga 3D Flyin a few months back. The first was an Edge 540 doing a knife edge circle on the deck.

Later, an engine failure during a low altitude torque roll.....he ran it out of gas. It was a Carden Extra.

Wonder if he'll make the Flyin in Mobile this November?

Wow, I feel for the guy. I hope his pockets are deeper than mine because if I damage my little .46 planes or heaven forbid the 25% CAP then I'm feeling like crap for a L-O-N-G time while I save some $$$ to fix/replace the bad boy.

See.... I knew there was a reason I wanted to go to a bigger plane! You can put several 14 inch cuts through the wing and it will still fly!

Kudos to the pilots and their skill in landing after the collision!

Default Still alive

Hey guys,
Well it has been a tough summer and fall for me. As you all know I lost my 40% Edge in Chattanooga on the lowest knife Edge pass that I have ever made. That same day, late in the afternoon during a 8 airplane torque roll gaggle I ran out of fuel in a torque roll with my 40 % Extra 330. It looked a whole lot worse than it was. It basically broke my Engine box and cracked my cowl. My new Edge that I had the mid-air with won't be ready for Fairhope. I will have to replace the wing, rudder and canopy before it's ready to fly. So this week I went and dusted off the 40% Cap 232. This is the plane that I will be flying at the Fairhope 3D event. I've been trying to find someone that will let me borrow and Edge to fly but for some reason nobody will loan me one. (Wonder Why?) I already have a new Edge kit, so #3 will be built in the next few months. As for the Extra and Edge #2 they will live to fly another day. Hope all of you can come to the Fairhope, AL 3D event. For more information on Fairhope, you can visit my website at www.blaineaustin.com and click onto the Extreme Aerobatic Club page.
Thanks
Blaine

Blaine,
You know you've got a ride with mine in Fairhope. Chattonooga was kinda rough on both of us. But HEY, that's what it's all about(not crashing)and "Taking it to the EDGE!!"

Default A Ton of Talent Here

It's nice to have all of you guys that keep us on the "edge" of our seats in one column. I travelled from new jersey to see the chatanooga 3D event and will remember it for quite awhile. The whole bunch of flyers there was outstanding, on and off of the flightline. Made some nice contacts and aquaintances. I want to venture off topic slightly, only because I did ask this question in the Giant Scale forum, but couldn't get the info needed. I hope the forum gods will look favorably on my request. This past season is my first with giant scale in my 26 years plus of flying. It's the best, and I can't stop messin with these big birds. You can see my planes on my small site here ->
http://www.********.net/pages/bobnj/
If you click on Barbs legs you will see my latest and most cherished posession, a Carden 40% Cap. To date it has taught me the most valuable lessons I've learned in 3D. I am looking to save a little weight and just ordered an additional canopy kit from Carden. I am also interested in saving some weight on the landing gear. Problem is the troy built specs are just a little off for my particular plane, especially the spec for gear width. The troy says 2" wide at the bottom of the fuse. My fuse has a very pronounced slot cut for the gear, but it's way short of 2" with no easy way of modifying the fuse. Have any of you guys or anyone you know used the troy without a problem? Is my plane just built different or is plane/gear modification necessary? Thanks for any info and keep up the good work. Thanks JB for all the inspiration

Blaine:

Sounds like you have enough friends to loan you planes, but your welcome to fly mine as well. Sorry I wont be able to make it to your 3d event, I burned all my bridges going to memphis. But next year, I will plan on it. I bet I would learn alot. I learned tons from you guys in Memphis. Try to make it to our festival of giants next year. July 10-13th,2003. We do have an applebees in St. Charles.

Heres a pic from Memphis
