FYI
Just read new tower talk and the Carl Goldberg Ultimate 10 300 is back in production along with a limited line of other CG models. Pricing is very good, $169.99 includes gel coated fiberglass cowl and wheel pants, 68" wing. Merry Christmas.... Winter building project here I come!!!

I just started building an "old" kit that I bought on RCU. What a great design and kit. Truly a joy to build.
$170 w/glass is an exceptional value. I thought the span was 54" on the original design. 68" is bigger than the DP Ultimate which is 60". I bet it's still 54".
I guess I'll have to buy a spare when it hits the LHS.
BTW, Saito 1.20 going in mine. Should be sweet at 8.5-9 pounds.
COOOOL!!!!

***??? I thought CGM was outta here, bought by Lanier?
Or has Lanier been assimilated too, and The Empire is no longer bothering to try and conceal the fact that they own or control probably 50% of the major hobby producers???
Yup, a 68" Ultimate would need a VW engine... the CGM kit was 54". One of the most stupid things I ever did was sell mine. Great flying model... it has the gliding characteristics of a cinder block, but as long as that engine is running good, hang on!

I thought it had a 54" wing also, the catalog said 68", probably a type O. what would be a good engine for the plane to be 3d capible? was hoping a 120 4 stroke would do the trick.. Any thoughtw would be appreciated.

Although I'm not into 3D, I think the Saito 1.20S is a good choice. I made a very nerdy spread sheet to help me decide which engine to buy. If you include the weight of the plane the Saito 120S beat out: Saito 100, YS91, OS1.20III-P. If you can get it for under $300, it will be a best value too. You should always consider the total weight of airplane AND engine before making a power plant selection. You would never use an .049 or a 80cc just because it had great power/weight. You have to look at the entire airplane system.
If you want to go two stroke, MVVS 91 looks good, Webra 1.20 (which I have in a Sukhoi) would be a monster, and a Moki 1.35 would be insane.
gliding characteristics of a cinder block? I thought it was more like an empty shoe box. Ha Ha Ha
That's what's so cool about bipes. The whole airplane is an air brake.

I have one with an old YS 1.20 SF, YS's first 4 stroke. It is absolutely perfect for this plane. It is capable of 3D with this engine, but the wing loading limits the maneuvers possible with it.

Is the Ultimate capible of 3D?? I am still undecided about a motor... Is a .91 2 stroke or a 1.20 4 stroke enough motor to do the job? What is the finished weight suppose to be on this plane?? Your help is appreciated.

Mine is a 54" with a YS120AC. I slowed it down with a 16x8APC and the vertical is unlimited.
It fits in my wagon assembled, and is a thrill to fly.
I have become "hooked" on pattern and the bipe no longer belongs in my stable.
I'm forced to offer it for sale at the Madison Co. swap meet this Sat. croz

I spoke with a factory rep a couple of weeks ago who told me that the entire Goldberg line of kits was being converted from die cut to laser cut. This transition should be done by December and some are ready now!. The ARF's should be available by the first of the year.

Well, with laser cutting, the kit doesn't really need to be redesigned. I've been wanting to build a Goldberg Super Chipmunk ever since I started in R/C. Looks like I'll finally get the opportunity.
Regarding the "evil empire," what happened is that Great Planes has negotiated exclusive distributorship with CGP. A hobby shop owner I know was in the middle of becoming a Goldberg dealer when she got the letter from them saying that everything could be purchased through Great Planes.

I did not mean re-designed in that there was anything wrong with it (I have owned 2) I was hoping maybe they re-designed it to be bigger--maybe to compete with GP's Pitts.

The Ultimate is a really good flying machine. I changed the engine because it didn't accelerate enough during a landing. Because of this the wheelpants flipped into the bottom wing, creating two holes. Somebody told if the engine fails or hesitates, the Ultimate will fall down. This is true.
Otherwise the FT120-II was powerfull enough for the 4.1 kg (9 lbs) plane.
There is a picture of it in my gallery. When I have time, I will post in-flight pictures with the FT120-II.
I also have the Extra and the Chipmunk (after 10 years of duty, I am changing the oracover from the fuselage at this moment).
All very good planes.
Bye,
Vincent
